SPRINGFIELD For the second straight year, the Springfield Falcons players delivered holiday gifts to pre-selected families at the Greater Springfield YMCA as part of their special holiday cheer program.
Falcons players, along with their wives and girlfriends, purchased and wrapped the gifts for this special delivery. The Falcons and wives/girlfriends arrived on a Peter Pan Bus at the YMCA to present 15 families with holiday gifts. A special thanks to Dillweedz Cafe in downtown Springfield as well for their special donation to this special event.
This special holiday event is part of the YMCA's "Devoted Families - Enriching Lives Teen Parent Program," which began in 2006. There are currently 15 families enrolled in the teen parent program. The program accepts both male and female high school drop-out teens that are pregnant or parenting.
The goal of the program is to assist teens in achieving their GED while at the same time, providing on-site child care services for their children.
Teens also must attend life skills workshops and home visits where they are guided in child development and parenting classes, budgeting, job training, etc.
Teen parents are encouraged to consider college once they have completed their GED, or to attend a career institute where they can acquire a skill that will provide a livable wage. The ultimate goal of the program is to break the cycle of poverty.
For more information regarding this special event, please contact the Falcons Office at 739-3344.
