Ferrentino earns NE-10 Honor Roll nod after three straight double doubles

SOUTH EASTON – Sophomore forward Krista Ferrentino of East Longmeadow earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Women's Basketball Honor Roll after leading the American International College women's basketball team to wins over No. 13 Stonehill and Merrimack last week.

Ferrentino poured in 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, her second double-double in a row and her sixth of the year, to lead the Yellow Jackets as the American International College women's basketball team upset 13th-ranked Stonehill College 59-55 on Jan. 23.

Ferrentino recorded her seventh double-double of the season and her third in as many games with 17 point and 10 boards as the Yellow Jackets pulled out a tightly contested 67-64 win over Merrimack College on Jan. 26.

WNE students named to CCC academic all-conference list



SPRINGFIELD – Western New England University (WNE) men's soccer player Zachary Coopee, a sophomore biomedical engineering student from Hampden, and women's soccer player Gabrielle Bates, a sophomore biology major from Wilbraham, were among 36 Golden Bears on the fall 2012 Commonwealth Coast Conference academic all-conference team released on Jan. 28.

Homich named Player of the Week



BUZZARD'S BAY – Ludlow's Elisha Homich, a senior guard on the Bridgewater State University women's basketball team, averaged 17 points, 8.5 assists and five steals in a 2-0 week for Bears, including a double-double effort of 15 points and a career-high 13 assists in a 90-61 victory over MCLA to go with 19 points and four helpers in a 104-81 triumph over Fitchburg State to earn Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors. Shot 50 percent (7-14) from three-point range for the week.

Gervais named to MASCAC honor roll



BUZZARDS BAY – Targie Gervais, a Westfield State University (WSU) sophomore from Springfield was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference women's track and field honor roll after she took top honors in the 60 meters (7.94) and added second place finish in the 200 meters (27.12) for the Owls at the Springfield Invitational.

Welsh helps Elms to victory



UTICA, N.Y. – Junior Kevin Welsh of Wilbraham recorded a team-high eight digs in the Elms College men's volleyball team's 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-17) sweep of Emerson College at the SUNYIT Tournament on Jan. 27.

Grippo, Furtek post firsts



WESTON – Longmeadow's James Grippo was first in the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:36.61) and second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.11), but the Elms College men's swimming and diving team suffered a 123-114 loss at the hands of Regis College on Jan. 26.

Ludlow's Emalee Furtek was first in the 50-yard butterfly (29.67) and powered to second in the 200-yard butterfly (2:42.58) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:12.69) for the women's team, which also lost 144-108.

Springfield College falls to Babson



SPRINGFIELD – Senior Alex Berthiaume of Springfield netted a game-high 21 points, but the Springfield College (SC) men's basketball could not overcome a sluggish offensive second half as it dropped a 69-65 conference battle with Babson College on Jan. 26.

Kelly chips in with 10 points in WSU win



WESTFIELD – Hampden's Briana Kelly celebrated her 22nd birthday in style by scoring 10 points in the Westfield State University women's basketball team's 81-51 victory over Salem State University on Jan. 26.

Moriarty's helpers lead WIT to victory



JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Senior Tyler Moriarty of Wilbraham played a large part in Wentworth Institute of Technology's sweep of a men's volleyball quad meet at New Jersey City University on Jan. 26.

Moriarty had 20 assists in a 3-1 win over CCNY, 32 assists and six digs in a 3-0 sweep of Brooklyn and 11 digs and 37 assists in a 3-0 win against New Jersey City.

Normoyle wins in Pride victory



SPRINGFIELD – Springfield's Michael Normoyle finished first in the 100 yard breast stroke with a time of 59.61 as the SC men's swimming and diving team cruised to a 173-123 victory over Babson College on Jan. 26.

Solid efforts from Elsir, Mickiewicz's not enough



WENHAM – Sophomore Musa Elsir of Springfield scored 11 points and had a team-high eight rebounds and junior Ryan Mickiewicz of East Longmeadow scored seven points, grabbed four rebounds and dished four assists as WNE men's basketball team staged a valiant comeback for the last 10 minutes of its game at Gordon on Jan. 23, but the Fighting Scots hung on for a 79-71 victory.

Elsir also recorded 13 points in a 100-92 loss to Nichols College on Jan. 26.

Pride's comeback bid falls short



WORCESTER – Springfield's Alex Berthiaume scored 18 points, and Springfield College held Worcester Polytechnical Institute without a field goal for the final 6:28, but the Pride could not complete its comeback bid as it lost to the nation's sixth-ranked team, 69-66, in a battle of two unbeaten New England Men's and Women's Athletic Conference NEWMAC men's basketball teams on Jan. 23.

Felix leads WSU over Fitchburg State



FITCHBURG – Sophomore center Gabby Felix of Springfield scored 18 points to lead Westfield State University to an 82-52 victory over Fitchburg State University in women's basketball on Jan. 22.

Skiffington comes through in the clutch for Bay Path



HOLYOKE – East Longmeadow's Kayla Skiffington sunk a game-tying layup, then hit a game-winning free throw 35 seconds later as the Bay Path College women's basketball team rallied past Mitchell College 51-50 on Jan. 22.

Skiffington finished the game with 13 points and nine rebounds.
