Gervais honored by MASCAC; Pride swimmers set records

BUZZARDS BAY – Springfield's Targie Gervais, sophomore member of the Westfield State University (WSU) women's indoor track and field team, earned a spot on the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) honor roll after she captured the Division III New England individual crown with a school record performance in the 55 meters (7.17 seconds) for the MASCAC champion Owls at the Division III New England Championships.

Pride swimming places second at NEWMACs

CAMBRIDGE – Led by Springfield's Michael Normoyle, the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team finished second at the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship on Dec. 17.

Holyoke's Phillip Murphy took ninth in the 1,650 freestyle after registering a 16:50.99. Fellow Holyoke native Pat Geraghty's time of 1:57.81 earned him eighth in the 100-yard freestyle.

On the women's side, Kelsey Poole of Westfield was fifth in the 200-yard backstroke after touching in 2:09.65 as the Pride finished second.

AIC women's track and field places second at NE-10 meet

BOSTON – Senior Sanya Foster of Springfield placed second in the shot put with a throw of 12.37 meters and was also the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 14.97 meters as the American International College (AIC) women's track and field team finished a program-best second of 11 teams with 123 points at the 2013 Northeast-10 Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 17.

Junior Jenna Miller of Chicopee tied for fifth in the high jump with a leap of 1.52 meters.

Pickett dominates on the boards in Elms College wins

NASHUA, N.H. – Three starters on the Elms College women's basketball team scored in double figures including sophomore forward JC Pickett of Chicopee, who made eight of 13 shots from the field en route to 19 points, tying for the team-high, and pulled down 11 rebounds, also a team-high, as the Blazers posted a 70-62 victory over Daniel Webster College on Feb. 13.

Pickett was equally effective on the glass for the Blazers in their Feb. 16 regular-season finale against Newbury, securing 13 rebounds in a 70-63 victory to secure the second seed in the New England Collegiate Conference championship.

In the tournament's opening round on Feb. 19, Pickett pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and scored seven points as the Blazers topped No. 7 Mitchell College, 72-48.

Felix nets double-doubles

WESTFIELD – Sophomore center Gabby Felix, who was named to the (MASCAC) second-team all-conference squad, scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed a season-high 16 rebounds to pace Westfield State University (WSU) to a 63-52 victory over Salem State University in the quarterfinals of the MASCAC women's basketball tournament.

Felix, a Springfield native, also posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the WSU women's basketball team suffered an upset loss to Fitchburg State University 75-71 on Feb. 16.

Santiago plays key role as WSU captures MASCAC title

WESTFIELD – Sophomore Jordan Santiago of Westfield tied a team-high with 16 points and registered five steals as the WSU men's basketball team won the MASCAC regular season championship with an 81-67 victory over Fitchburg State University on Feb. 16.

Santiago also scored 10 points and dished five assists in a 77-59 victory over Framingham State on Feb. 12.

Berthiaume leads Pride to win in regular-season finale

NORTON – Springfield College senior guard Alex Berthiaume of Springfield led all scorers with 14 points, three rebounds, two blocks and one assist as the Pride men's basketball team wrapped up the regular season with a 64-49 win at Wheaton College on Feb. 16.

Elsir dominated boards in WNE basketball victory

SPRINGFIELD – The Western New England University (WNE) men's basketball team held a 34-29 edge on the glass as Musa Elsir (eight points) grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds to top all players in the convincing 69-47 triumph over the University of New England on Feb. 16.

Vautrin kills 10 in Elms win

CHICOPEE – Freshman outside hitter Jeff Vautrin of Chicopee, recorded 10 kills and 11 digs in the Elms College men's volleyball team's 3-1 (26-24, 20-25, 25-16, 25-22) win over Lasell College on Feb. 13.

Aleksandr Kuzmenko, another freshman outside hitter from Chicopee, hit .700 for the match off the bench with seven kills on 10 swings with no errors.

Vautrin also downed a match-high eight kills as the Blazers posted a 3-0 (25-6, 25-6, 25-3) sweep of Lesley University on Feb. 16.

Delisle competes at New England championships

LEWISTOWN, Maine – WSU freshman Zack Delisle of Chicopee just missed earning All-New England honors in the pole vault, clearing 13-11 1/4 at the New England Division III indoor track and field championships at Bates College on Feb. 16.

Medina records win on Senior Day

SPRINGFIELD – Senior tri-captain Anthony Medina of Springfield defeated Dustin Jones in the 149-pound weight class 13-4 as the WNE wrestling team sunk the Oswego State Lakers 29-12 on Feb. 15.

Medina also won a 4-1 decision as the Golden Bears went 1-2 at the Roger Williams University Quadrangular.
