Gervais sets WSU record, earns All-New England honors

BUZZARDS BAY – Springfield's Targie Gervais, a Westfield State University (WSU) sophomore, earned All-New England honors with a seventh place finish in the 60 meters (7.77) for the Owls at the All-New England Championships, setting school record in event with time of 7.74 in preliminaries. For her accomplishment, she was named MASCAC Co-Athlete of the Week.

Felix named to MASCAC honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY – WSU center Gabby Felix of Springfield averaged a double-double effort of 15.7 points and 10 rebounds during the MASCAC Championships for the runner-up Owls, including career-high 26 points and 18 rebounds in a 63-52 quarterfinal victory over Salem State to earn a spot on the MASCAC weekly honor roll.

Pickett tabbed NECC Rookie of the Week

ATTLEBORO – Sophomore women's basketball player JC Pickett of Chicopee earned New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week honors as announced by the league office on Feb. 25.

Pickett was named Rookie of the Week for the second time this season after helping the second-seeded Blazers to their second straight NECC tournament title game in as many seasons.

Pickett averaged 7.3 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game during Elms' runner up finish in the NECC postseason. Pickett, who earned all-tournament honors, scored 22 points and 12 rebounds against Becker College and posted 13 rebounds against Mitchell College to highlight her efforts in the two categories.

Berthiaume named to All-NEWMAC first team

BABSON PARK – Springfield College's Alex Berthiaume was selected to the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Men's Basketball All-Conference team. Berthiaume earned first-team honors for the second-straight season on Feb. 26.

Last year's NEWMAC Player of the Year, Berthiaume had a standout senior campaign as he led the league in scoring with 17.5 points per game. Shooting nearly 42 percent from the field for the season, Berthiaume scored at least 20 points in 12 games this season. A local product of Springfield, he was second on the team with 65 assists and third in steals with 40.

Foster competes at New England Indoor Championships

BOSTON – Senior Sanya Foster of Springfield finished 20th in the shot put with a throw of 11.68 meters and finished 20th in the weight throw with a toss of 13.82 meters as the American International College (AIC) women's track & field team finished 14th of 36 teams competing at the 2013 New England Indoor Championships, hosted by Boston University on Feb. 24.

Vautrin posts solid performances

CHICOPEE – Chicopee's Jeff Vautrin finished with 14 kills, a match-best 15 digs and three aces, but the Elms College men's volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (26-28, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 15-12) decision to Daniel Webster College on Feb. 20.

The Blazers were led by Vautrin who downed a match-best 23 kills in a 3-2 (25-18, 25-15, 22-25, 22-25, 16-14) win over Newbury College during a tri-meet on Feb. 23 in which they also fell 3-1 (25-18, 25-20, 19-25, 26-24) to Lasell College.

Vautrin also downed 14 kills a 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-27, 25-17, 15-10) setback at Wentworth Institute of Technology on Feb. 26.

Spano nets two in AIC loss

SPRINGFIELD – West Springfield's Bobby Spano scored two goals, but the AIC men's lacrosse team dropped a 10-8 decision to visiting Mercy College on Feb. 20 in the what was the season-opener for both teams.

Fellow West Side native Kyle Brodeur also scored on his lone shot of the game.
