Girls West Basketball takes gold |

SPRINGFIELD The West girls’ basketball team, coached by East Longmeadow native David Proulx of Western New England (WNE), captured the gold medal at the Bay State Games in Boston with a 60-50 victory over Northeast on July 17.
This was the third consecutive gold-medal game appearance for the West squad (comprised of players in grades 9 to 12).
Proulx’s squad played an ambitious schedule, which featured six games in four days playing four 10-minute quarters each contest. His hard-working squad finished with a 5-1 record in the tournament and avenged an earlier 52-46 loss to Northeast the previous Thursday.
“With our limited amount of practice time, it was amazing how quickly we developed into a cohesive group,” said Proulx, who also led the West team to the gold medal in 2009. “Our perimeter defense and rebounding were the keys to our success. We were fast and quick, and relied on our defense to create good scoring opportunities.”
Proulx has been an assistant coach with the WNE women’s basketball program the past two seasons. He is a 2006 graduate of Boston University where he served as the team manager of the Terriers’ Division I men’s basketball team, coached by Dennis Wolf, who is now the head coach of the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team.
