SPRINGFIELD The Western New England College men's soccer team added some shiny new hardware to its trophy case thanks to the performances of several players from the Pioneer Valley.
After dropping its first match of the season to SUNY New Paltz, the Golden Bears posted a 16-1-6 record and were ranked 12th nationally in the final regular season National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) Division III Poll
WNEC placed first in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) with a 9-0-4 record and captured back-to-back conference championships with wins over Colby-Sawyer (3-0), Salve Regina (5-0) and Nichols (3-1).
Western New England College participated in its fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament and tied Amherst 0-0 in double overtime in the first round match. However, the Golden Bears season came to an end when the Lord Jeffs took a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks in a hard fought match.
Leading the team in scoring with 32 points (12 goals and eight assists) this year was senior forward Dale Totman (Frontier Regional) of Conway who was named TCCC Player-of-the-Year and selected to the All-TCCC First Team.
Former Ludlow High School standouts, junior midfielders Tony Rosa and Justin Martins, and defenseman Marco Gomes were also key contributors to the Golden Bears success.
Rosa shot in his first goal of the season against Nichols in the conference championship.
Martins, who was named WNEC Male Athlete-of-the-Week, netted six goals and six assists on the season. Gomes was selected as an All-TCCC Honorable mention.
Sophomore forward John Parsons (Frontier Regional) of Sunderland and midfielder Alex Dos Santos (Cathedral) of Ludlow, and freshmen midfielders Corey Howard (Hopedale) of Hopedale and Austin Santolini (Pioneer Valley Christian School) of Agawam also saw significant playing time.
Dos Santos was selected to the All-TCCC Second Team and was named TCCC Co-Rookie-of-the-Week, and WNEC Male Athlete-of-the-Week.
