Golden Eagles fly high over ‘Chaug

SPRINGFIELD — Behind the running of Sacoy Malone and a strong defensive effort, the Central High School football team secured the top spot in the Western Massachusetts Division I playoffs, beating Minnechaug 35-14 in their Thanksgiving Day showdown.

The loss dropped the Falcons to the fourth seed, setting up a rematch between these two teams in the opening round of the playoffs on Nov. 29. The game will take place at Chicopee Comprehensive High School at 7:30 p.m.

The score was tied, 14-14, in the second quarter until Quentin Jones scored from six yards out with 1:39 remaining in the first half, giving Central a lead it would not relinquish.

Malone added two insurance touchdowns in the second half to put the game away.

Malone rushed for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Golden Eagles, while Travis Cusson and Perry Nowell picked off Minnechaug quarterback Greg Heineman’s passes.

Heineman had a hand in both Minnechaug touchdowns, but was limited to 115 yards through the air and the Falcons were held scoreless in the second half.

Lancers top Spartans

LONGMEADOW — Keeping the ball on the ground almost exclusively, the Longmeadow football team racked up nearly 350 yards of total offense to beat East Longmeadow 35-14 on Thanksgiving morning.

Longmeadow jumped out to a 28-0 lead before East Longmeadow scored as time expired in the third quarter.

Austin Sierra and Nathan Elder carried the majority of the workload. Sierra rushed 12 times for 140 yards and a touchdown, while Elder scored three times on his way to 79 yards.

Connor Samuelson also scored for the Lancers.

Dan McGuill completed eight passes for 78 yards with a touchdown and an interception for the Spartans. Nick Cutler scored on a nine-yard run, while David Dubner rushed 12 times for 71 yards in the loss.

Longmeadow earned the second seed in the Western Massachusetts Division I tournament and will face West Springfield in the first round on Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. at Chicopee Comprehensive High School.

Elms College falls to St. Joseph’s

CHICOPEE — Sophomore guard Marisabel Santiago of Springfield contributed eight points, including a pair of three-pointers, while senior guard Carolyn Talmadge of Wilbraham added six, but the Elms College women’s basketball team lost to St. Joseph’s 92-60 in the Rutland Herald Tip-Off Tournament hosted by Castleton State College in Glenbrook Gymnasium on Nov. 18.

Schmidt wins three-meter dive

WESTFIELD — Westfield State (WSU) women’s diving team’s senior standout Kim Schmidt of Longmeadow placed first in the three-meter dive with 263.85 points in a 160-126 loss to Smith College on Nov. 19.

She was edged out in the one-meter dive, scoring 261.2 points.

Bronner named to honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY — Phil Bronner, a junior forward at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference weekly honor roll on Nov. 20.

The Wilbraham native netted a pair of goals in a 1-0-1 week for the Corsairs, including a game-winner in their 3-1 victory at Worcester State to go along with a marker in a 3-3 overtime draw with Salem State.

Berthiaume named Marymount Invitational MVP

ARLINGTON, VA. — Springfield College’s Alex Berthiaume was named the Marymount Invitational Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

The Springfield native scored 21 points to lead Springfield College to a 90-81 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in the first round on Nov. 23, then scored 17 points and added four rebounds to lead the Springfield College men’s basketball team to a 63-45 victory over the host school in the championship game.

Felix records double-double

WESTFIELD — Springfield’s Gabby Felix was strong for the Westfield State women’s basketball team, keeping the Owls within striking distance with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds, but the Owls fell to Mount Ida 62-56 on Nov. 22.
