Gryzko makes NE-10 second team

SOUTH EASTON – West Springfield's Dan Gryzko of the American International College (AIC) men's lacrosse team has been named a Second-Team Northeast-10 All-Conference selection, it was announced by the conference office following a vote of the NE-10 head coaches.

Gryszko started in all 15 games on defense for the Yellow Jackets after missing the entire 2012 season due to injury, tallying 52 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers to go with five goals and two assists. His 25 caused turnovers led the team and ranked him second in the NE-10, while his 52 ground balls were the second-most on the team and ranked him ninth in the conference.

This was the second all-conference selection for Gryszko, who was named to the All-Rookie team in 2011.

Asselin named NCBWA Hitter of the Week

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Chicopee's Dan Asselin, an outfielder for the AIC baseball team was named this week's East Region National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Hitter of the Week for games played from April 22-April 28, 2013.

The Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week, Asselin batted .500/.556/.875 in a 2-2 week, go­ing 8-for-16 with one double, one triple, one homer, five RBI and four runs scored. He was 3-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBI in a 7-2 win over Southern Connecticut Saturday after going 2-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored against the Owls Friday. He was also 2-for-5 with a run scored in a 6-5 win over Le Moyne.

Asselin and Dave Clark of West Springfield also earned a spot on the Northeast-10 Baseball Honor Roll.

Since receiving the honor, Asselin went 2-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to eight games, seven of which were multi-hit performances in AIC's 2-0 win over Assumption College on April 30.

Cherutich qualifies for NCAAs

SOUTH EASTON – Senior Jeptui Cherutich of Springfield was named to the Northeast-10 Honor Roll on April 23 after turning in an NCAA qualifying performance.

Cherutich finished 23rd in the 5,000-meter run with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 17:14.21 at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational.

WSU track teams take second

BRIDGEWATER - Westfield State University (WSU) junior sprinter Zack Madera of Southwick placed second in two events with fine times of 11.17 and 22.71 in the 100 and 200 meter dashes as the Westfield State University men's track and field team placed second in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference championships on April 27.

Chicopee's Zack Delisle place second in the pole vault (14-1 ¼).

Springfield's Karen Dowe was runner up in the triple jump (35-3 ¾) for the WSU women's team, who also places second on April 28.
