Hampden athletes earn WNE Athlete of the Week awards

SPRINGFIELD — Junior T.J. Fatse and sophomore Ali Pessolano were honored on Jan. 18 as the Western New England (WNE) Male and Female Athletes of the Week. Both student-athletes reside in Hampden.

Fatse, WNE hockey’s goalie, put an end to the State University of New York Geneseo’s five-game winning streak by making a career high 46 saves in his first start — and second appearance — of the season in a 1-0 win one Jan. 13.

He turned away 20 shots in the opening period, 10 in the second stanza, and 16 in the final period. This also was the first collegiate shutout for Fatse.

He also was selected the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northeast Goalie of the Week.

Pessolano, a guard on the women’s basketball squad, averaged 13.0 points and 4.7 rebounds in a 2-1 week for the Golden Bears. She shot 46.7 percent from the field and made 10-of-17 three-pointers (58.8 percent).

Pessolano poured in 15 points (five-for-six three-pointers) in a 64-49 win at Wentworth, pulled down nine rebounds in a 50-42 victory over Salve Regina, and netted a career high 16 points in a 55-48 loss against Eastern Nazarene.

She followed up her award-winning week by scoring a career-high 17 points as the WNE women’s basketball team posted a 58-54 victory over Curry College on Jan. 17 and continued her fine play with 12 points (four-of-nine three-pointers) in a 66-46 victory over Roger Williams on Jan. 19.

Talmadge sports strong all-around game

CHICOPEE — Senior guard Carolyn Talmadge of Wilbraham contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to help lift Elms to a hard-fought 69-61 victory over Newbury College on Jan. 14.

Berthiaume paces Pride

NORTON — Springfield’s Alex Berthiaume poured in 24 points as the Pride dispatched Wheaton College, 85-59, on Jan 18.

Caliento victorious in tri-meet

NEW LONDON, CONN. — Junior Tom Caliento of Longmeadow scored a convincing 9-4 victory at 165 pounds as the WNE wrestling team split a tri-meet defeating host Coast Guard 24-21 before dropping a 25-18 decision against Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Jan. 14.

Mickiewicz posts solid lines

SPRINGFIELD — WNE men’s basketball sophomore guard Ryan Mickiewicz, an East Longmeadow native, netted nine points with six assists and a pair of steals in a 77-69 loss to Eastern Nazarene on Jan. 14.

In a 69-60 loss to Curry College on Jan. 17, he scored only six points, but had a team-best six rebounds along with three steals and a pair of assists.

AIC competes at URI invitational

KINGSTON, R.I. — Junior Sanya Foster of Springfield tied for fourth in the shot put with a throw of 12.08 meters as the American International College (AIC) men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the University of Rhode Island’s Sorlein Invitational.

On the men’s side, freshman Caldwell Miller of Springfield finished 18th in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.37 seconds and finished 23rd in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.19 seconds.

Jhon Wielblad of Ludlow finished 13th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.75 seconds.

AIC men’s hoops falls in OT

COLCHESTER, VT. — Sophomore forward Brennan Cooper, a Springfield native, contributed 10 points, but AIC fell in overtime to St. Michael’s College, 81-76, on Jan. 14.

AIC splits against D-I foes

SPRINGFIELD — Ludlow’s Ronnie Tetreault pinned Sacred Heart sophomore Sam Sheppard in 1:10 as the AIC wrestling team defeated the Division I foe, 23-22, after falling to another Division I team in Boston University, 29-15, in a tri-meet on Jan. 14.

HCC edges UConn Avery Point

HOLYOKE — Springfield’s Ruben Delrosario led the way with 22 points as the Holyoke Community College men’s basketball team saw four Cougars posted double digit scoring efforts in a 73-70 win over University of Connecticut Avery Point on Jan. 18.

Denzel Washington, also of Springfield, added 10 points.

Scudder posts personal best

DANBURY, CONN. — Sophomore Paige Scudder of Wilbraham finished third in the 1650 freestyle in 13:50.44, which was a 28-second improvement from her former best showing as the WNE women’s swimming team dropped a 162-121 decision at Western Connecticut on Jan. 15.
