HCC women's soccer sets school scoring record

MANCHESTER, Conn. – Holyoke had quite the offensive showing on Sept. 12 at Manchester Community College, scoring an all-time program best 16 goals while two players tied individual HCC records in a 16-0 rout.

Freshman forward Tai Lopez of Springfield netted five goals, which ties a school record set by Julie Peltier in 1990. She also tied Peltier's record of points in a game with 11 (five goals, one assist).

Sophomore midfielder Brittany McCarthy of Chicopee found the back of the net four times.

Malynda Riopelle of Springfield made three saves in net for her foutth shutout of the season.

Westfield's Leigh Strycharz netted two goals and registered an assist while Laura Masciotra of Agawam and Jenn Perry of West Springfield both scored a goal and assisted two others.

Kara Peters had a goal and an assist.

They followed up the record-setting day with a 7-0 win over Massasoit Community College on Sept. 15.

Morin continues strong play for Bay Path tennis

LONGMEADOW – Springfield native Stephanie Morin continued to play a vital role in the Bay Path College tennis team's success with two outstanding performances last week.

Morin blanked opponent Julie Embley 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles position, then teamed up with Symone Watson 8-2 in first doubles as the Wildcats shut out Mitchell College 9-0 on Sept. 15.

Morin followed up that performance with a 6-1, 6-2 win at second singles and another first doubles win with Watson, 8-0, as Bay Path swept Albertus Magnus College 9-0 on Sept. 17.

Fruwirth leads Curry to win over Westfield State

MILTON – Curry College junior Kevin Fruwirth of Agawam connected with classmate Skubie Mageza on a nine-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds remaining in regulation, lifting the Colonels to a 34-27 victory over visiting Westfield State University (WSU) in a in non-divisional New England Football Conference game on Sept. 15.

Fruwirth was 30-for-47 for a game-high 290 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Parrish Rogers-Reed of Westfield chipped in with seven total tackles.

WNE tennis falls to Gordon

SPRINGFIELD – Linda Mustafa of Chicopee earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at first singles, but the Western New England University (WNE) women's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision Saturday at the hands of visiting Gordon College on Sept. 15.

WSU tops Mass. Maritime in double overtime

BUZZARD'S BAY – Sophomore Keith Hevey Chicopee picked up the win in goal with a three-save effort as the WSU men's soccer team topped the Massachusetts Maritime Academy 1-0 in double overtime on Sept. 15.

Fisher competes at UMass Dartmouth Invitational

DARTMOUTH – Erica Fisher of Chicopee finished 83rd with 20:06.42 to crack the event's top 85 as the Springfield College women's cross country team finished 13th out of 38 competing teams at the UMass Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 15.

Owls blow out MMA

WESTFIELD – Westfield's Ashley Bovat netted a goal as the WSU women's soccer team scored four goals in a seven-minute span in the first half in an 8-0 blowout over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Sept. 15.

Chicopee's Leann Rivard had an assist on the game's first goal with a corner kick.

Emery becomes WNE's winningest coach

SPRINGFIELD – The WNE football team won its second game in a row 50-14 over visiting Worcester State as Keith Emery became the Golden Bears' winningest coach in the program's NCAA history.

Emery now owns a 41-33 record for a .554 winning percentage in eight seasons, surpassing Gerry Martin who won 40 games at the school from 1991 to 2004.

Burnusuz nets game winner for Yellow Jackets

SPRINGFIELD – Freshman midfielder Jason Burnusuz of Westfield gave the Yellow Jackets men's soccer team a 3-2 victory when he scored off a pass from teammate Ed Sharman in a Northeast-10 match against Bentley University on Sept. 15.

Kuzdzal competes at Eagle Invitational 8K

NASHUA, N.H. – Freshman Adam Kuzdzal of Chicopee completed the 8K Eagle Invitational at Mines Falls Park in 35:03 for the Elms College men's cross country team on Sept. 14.

Owls volleyball tops Blazers

CHICOPEE – Alyssa Danilow of West Springfield notched three service aces as the WSU women's volleyball team topped Elms College 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-14) on Sept. 11.

Christina Martin of Chicopee had six kills and 10 digs for the Blazers.

Koyscinski scores in loss

CHICOPEE – Freshman forward Kristina Kopyscinski of Agawam scored on a penalty stroke, but Smith College netted nine unanswered goals following a 2-2 tie to help lift the Pioneers to an 11-2 victory over the Elms College field hockey team on Sept. 11

WSU men's soccer ties WCSU

WESTFIELD – Goalie Keith Hevey of Chicopee had two stops as the WSU men's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie with Western Connecticut State University on Sept. 11.

AIC golf wins Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational

KEENE, N.H. – The American International College men's golf team to a first-place team finish at the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational on Sept. 10 as Yellow Jacket senior Nate Pereira of Ludlow tied for fifth with a four-over 148 (71-77), Ben Mann of Holyoke tied for 15th with a 12-over 156. and junior Tommy LeBlanc of Springfield finished 24th with a 14-over 158 (77-81).
