Local girls gymnasts top podiums at Massachusetts State Championships

AGAWAM Team members at Daggett Gymnastics in Agawam, Mass. topped the podiums at various sites throughout the state this past month. The Massachusetts USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic program wrapped up the 2010 season with its girls compulsory championships in May, and optionals in April. In addition, the "prep-op" program (Poise, Rhythm, Execution and Presentation), which also offers optional competition of varying levels, commenced with many Daggett gymnasts placing first in their divisions, while four Level 10 gymnasts completed their successful season at Nationals in Dallas, Texas.

Levels 3, 4, 5, 7, prep-op Results

For Level 3, Sarah Cerone, age seven from Agawam, placed second on vault at her state meet (9.4), while Tessa Basile, age eight from Suffield, Conn., won the Level 4 junior division all-around (37.55), uneven bars (9.55) and floor exercise (9.3), and placed second on vault (9.45) and third on beam (9.25).

In the Novice prep-op division, Molly Hancock, age eight from Westhampton, won floor (9.25), and Kaitlyn Ravizza, age nine from Agawam, won vault (9.475), bars (9.225), beam (9.05) and the all-around (36.8); Allison Echeverria, age 12 from Longmeadow, won beam (9.1), floor (9.475), and the all-around (36.95) for juniors. At the Intermediate level, Ashley Giannoccaro, age 10 from Suffield, Conn., was among the youngest competitors and placed 4th all-around. Angelina Pietroniro, age 13 from Agawam, was second on floor (9.375) in the senior division.

East Longmeadow's Krishiana Ramesh, age eight, won the Level 5 floor exercise (9.5) and was fourth on vault (9.375) and all-around (37.125). At the Level 6 State Championships, Longmeadow's Madison Perry won the 11 year old all-around (36.825), taking the uneven bars (9.1) and floor exercise (9.6) titles as well. Also from Longmeadow, nine year old Natalie Horowitz, one of the youngest level 6 state competitors, placed fourth on floor exercise with a 9.525 , and Alyssa Bergamini, age 10 from Suffield, scored a 9.4 for her floor exercise performance.

Competing in the more advanced Level 7 optional competition, Sarah Hogan, age 12 from Westfield, took fourth on beam (9.575) and seventh all-around (36.625) at her state meet on Cape Cod. After winning several meets during the season, Alison Renaud, age 12 from Agawam, qualified to States but was unable to compete due to injury.

Junior Olympic Nationals Results

For four elite Level 10 gymnasts, the 2010 gymnastics season concluded in Dallas, Texas, May 7-9. Karen Tang, a senior at Agawam High School, placed fourth on beam (9.475) in the Senior C division at the Junior Olympic National Championships. She will attend the University of Maryland on a full athletic scholarship in the fall where she will continue her competitive career with the Terps Division 1 gymnastics team. Abby Griswold, a sophomore at Monson High School, was part of the Region 6 (New England and New York) Junior C national team and Lauren Ross, a junior from South Windsor, Conn., competed in the Junior D division. As a Junior D team alternate, Kathy Tang, a sophomore at Agawam High School, competed on the final day of competition in the National Invitational Tournament, winning both beam (9.5) and the all-around (37.375).
