Longmeadow boys hoop captures Suburban League crown |

LONGMEADOW The Long-meadow boys eighth grade Su-burban League basketball team capped off an undefeated season by defeating Amherst 58-55 in the championship game.
The team has been together in the Suburban League for four years, and compiled an amazing 73-2 record in that span. They won the tournament championship in 2008, 2009 and 2011, and won the regular season title all four years including another undefeated campaign in 2009.
Mark Hurwitz, who coached the team along with Rudy D'Agosino all four years, said that the highlight of this unbelievable run was not their dramatic comeback from 17 down late in the championship game, but the team's sportsmanship award they received from the Suburban League after their undefeated 2009 season.
"It's one thing to win a bunch of titles and championships with a strong group of players, but to have all of the other coaches vote your team the sportsmanship award after we just completed an undefeated season, that's unheard of," he said.
"These kids are ultra competitive, and play very hard ... but they always play fair and their work ethic has been recognized by other coaches, players and parents," he continued. "That was the most rewarding aspect of working with these kids!"
