|
LONGMEADOW The Early Bird Invitational is an annual wrestling tournament hosted by Longmeadow that serves as a good early season test for local wrestlers. The tournament serves as Longmeadow's major fundraiser. It took place on Dec. 19.
Longmeadow placed seven wrestlers and came out with five champions. Senior captains Ian Altman, Dmitriy Donskoy, Greg Paquette and Matt Shapiro were crowned champs in each of their respective weight classes.
Shapiro (130) notched two pins before earning a major decision against Central's Mark Correa 16-4 in the finals. Paquette had two pins and a major decision en route to winning the 145-pound weight class. Donskoy (152) earned a technical fall and a pin before edging Central's Anthony's Brooks 7-3 in the finals.
Altman recorded three first period pins en route to capturing the 160-pound weight class. Freshman Michael Mariano lost to Central's Tyrique Dowdell in the 103-pound finals 13-4 and junior Glenn Michaelman fell to Central's Peter Hager at the 119 pounds, earning both wrestlers second place finishes. Sophmore Gary Shea showed promise early in the season capturing the 135-pound weight class with two pins and a 10-4 victory in the finals.
The Lancers (181.5) ended up a close third in team points behind Central (256) and Minnechaug (185). Altman shared Outstanding Wrestler honors with Central's Bemnet Banks and also shared the Best Technician Award with teammate Donskoy. Both awards were voted on by the coaches.
