BUZZARDS BAY Katrina Marrone a senior at Fitchburg State from Springfield finished fifth and broke her own school record in the 3,000 meters (12:42.31) for the Falcons at University of New Hampshire Wildcat Invitational to earn a spot on the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference weekly honor roll on April 15.
Gaines makes honor roll again
BUZZARDS BAY Holyoke's Daniel Gaines, a senior pitcher for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts baseball team fired a complete-game five-hit shutout and fanned six in the Trailblazers' 6-0 win at Fitchburg State to earn a spot in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference weekly honor roll released on April 9.
Locals garner softball honors
BUZZARDS BAY Taylor Ezold, a junior second baseman for Framingham State University and Vicki Hill, a freshman third baseman for Westfield State University, were named to the April 9 MASCAC weekly softball honor roll.
Ezold, a Westfield native, batted .409 (9-for-22) with double, two homers, seven RBIs and nine runs scored in a 5-3 week for the Rams, including a pair of round-trippers in a 17-0 victory at Massachusetts Maritime.
Hill, from West Springfield, belted a triple and scored the lone run in the Owls' 1-0 victory at Bridgewater State.
Dussault, Hill lift WSU
WESTFIELD Chicopee's Brittany Dussault was 3-for-3 at the plate, including an RBI double and West Springfield's Vicki Hill added an RBI single in the Westfield State University (WSU) softball team's 8-0 win over Smith College on April 9.
Dussault also went 3-for-3 with a two-RBI single in game one of an April 14 doubleheader sweep of Framingham State, while Hill chipped in with three hits in game two.
Locals play big part in AIC win
EASTON Sophomore Chris Goonan and senior Tim Bailey, both of Chicopee, tossed a scoreless eighth and ninth, respectively, to seal the win in game two of a split double-header at Stonehill College on April 9.
Dave Clark of West Springfield was 2-for-3 in the game with a home run in game two, while Dan Asselin of Chicopee drove in a run and Dan Fenton of Agawam laced a double and scored twice.
Clark records two of WNE's 14 hits
QUINCY Junior second baseman Tim Clark of West Springfield hit a single and a double and scored twice while knocking in a run as the WNE men's baseball team banged out 14 hits in posting a 14-7 victory over Suffolk on April 9.
Clark also went 4-for-4 with five RBIs, including a three-run home run as the Golden Bears defeated Wentworth 13-5 in the second game of a doubleheader on April 14 at Gordon College.
Grassetti's four points help pace Worcester State
BUZZARDS BAY The Worcester State University women's lacrosse team was aided by a marker and three helpers off the stick of freshman Angela Grassetti of Feeding Hills in an 18-8 New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance victory over Massachusetts Maritime on April 10.
Witasek scores in seventh as Elms ekes out victory
CHICOPEE Elms College sophomore first baseman Ally Witaszek of Feeding Hills picked up an infield single and then scored from first on a misplay by Anna Maria College in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie and give the Blazers a 4-3 victory on April 10. She went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Ali Bonavita of Agawam was also 2-for-3 at the dish, including an RBI double.
Schrutt stellar in setbacks
CHICOPEE The Elms College women's lacrosse team's senior goalkeeper Rachel Schrutt of Chicopee was stellar between the pipes notching 21 saves, but St. Joseph College pull out a 10-9 win on April 11.
Freshman attacker Lauren Mazza of Agawam scored three goals of her own in the first period, while sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey of South Hadley added a score.
Schrutt of Chicopee also made 21 saves when women's lacrosse team fell to Becker College 19-10 on April 14. Narey scored three goals in that game for the Blazers.
Keely pots five goals in victory
WESTFIELD Senior Carly Keeley of Feeding Hills had game highs of five goals, seven points, and six draw controls as the WSU women's lacrosse team remained undefeated in the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance with a resounding 19-7 victory over Salem State University on April 12.
Madera, Owls take first
AMHERST Zack Madera of Southwick and the rest of the WSU men's track team's hard-working 4 x 100 meter relay squad continued to impress as it finished first with a season-best 42.84, edging the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst (42.88) at the UMass Amherst Springtime Invitational on April 14.
Burnette effective in relief
HOLYOKE The Elms College baseball team's junior reliever Ryan Burnette of Chicopee pitching two scoreless innings preserve a 6-5 win over Mitchell College in game one of a doubleheader sweep on April 14.
Conway scores for Massachusetts Maritime
FRAMINGHAM Kerri Conway of West Springfield tallied a goal for Massachusetts Maritime Academy, but the Buccaneers dropped a 24-6 decision to Framingham State on April 14.
Spring's hot bat not enough
CHICOPEE Elms College softball's junior center fielder Leah Spring of South Hadley was 3 for 3 with a run scored in game two of an April 15 doubleheader with Lesley University, but it wasn't enough as the Blazers were swept 9-0 and 7-4.
Martin does little things in win
BIDDEFORD, Maine Senior midfielder Joe Martin of Springfield captured nine-of-12 face-offs and picked-up eight ground balls as the WNE mens lacrosse team earned a 14-5 victory over the University of New England on April 15.
AIC golf finishes second at River Hawk Invitational
DRACUT Sophomore Tommy LeBlanc of Springfield tied for 24th with a 17-over par 157 (78-79) as the American International College (AIC) men's golf team tied for second of 11 teams competing at UMass Lowell's River Hawk Invitational, hosted at the par-70 Meadow Creek Golf Club on April 15.
Freshman Ben Mann of Holyoke tied for 27th with a 19-over 159 (84-75).
