Mickiewicz’s heroics propel WNE

LYNDONVILLE, VT. — Western New England University (WNE) sophomore guard Ryan Mickiewicz of East Longmeadow fired in a three-pointer for his only basket of the game with one second remaining to lift the Western New England (WNE) men’s basketball team to a thrilling 68-67 victory over Lyndon State in the season opener for both teams on Nov. 15.

Mickiewicz, who missed his four previous attempts, had a fine all-around game with eight assists, six rebounds, and two steals without a turnover in 30 minutes.

Deaton commits to Stanford

AGAWAM — Gymnast Jonathan Deaton of Longmeadow signed his national letter of intent to attend Stanford University at a college signing event at Tim Daggett Gold Medal Gymnastics on Nov. 15.

Deaton, who has maintained a 3.96 grade point average, was a U.S. National Team Member from 2008 through 2011. He was a national champion in both the floor exercise, and vaulting this year and has been selected to compete for Team USA against China in Beijing in December.

Berthiaume contributes to record night for Pride

SPRINGFIELD — Alex Berthiaume, a junior guard from Springfield, recorded 21 points as the Springfield College men’s basketball team broke a record for most points scored in a game, defeating Castleton State, 132-113, in a wild contest at Blake Arena on Nov. 15.

Seven players scored in double figures for the Pride, who broke the old school scoring mark of 125 set against Bates in 1968.

Bartnik’s goal not enough

SPRINGFIELD — East Longmeadow native Jake Bartnik scored the game’s opening goal, but the WNE men’s soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision in overtime in the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 13.

Jones starts for Owls in opener

WESTFIELD — Janae Jones got the start at guard for the Westfield State women’s basketball team’s season opener at the 20th annual Tyler Tip-Off on Nov. 15. She pulled down seven rebounds to go along with five points, but Smith College came away with 60-55 win over the Owls.

Tetreault perfect at Wrestle For A Cure Duals

SPRINGFIELD — American International College senior wrestler Ronnie Tetreault of Ludlow, who is ranked eighth in the nation at the 165-pound weight class, went 4-0 on the day as the Yellow Jackets opened the 2011-12 season by going 1-3, including matches against three nationally ranked teams, at the Wrestle For A Cure Duals.

The Yellow Jackets opened competition with a 24-16 win over No. 30 Johns Hopkins University before falling to No. 10 York College, No. 4 Ithaca College 26-16 and Division I Lock Haven University 26-12.

Delrosario shines for HCC

HOLYOKE — The Holyoke Community College men’s basketball team received a strong performance from freshman guard Ruben Delrosario of Springfield who had with 19 points and six assists, but the Cougars fell to the Gateway Community College 80-60 in their season opener at People’s Bank Gymnasium at the Bartley Center.
