Miller, Owls set records as WSU soccer continues to roll

PROVIDENCE, RI Senior standout Kayley Miller of Ludlow scored two goals and set the school single-season scoring record to power the undefeated Westfield State University (WSU) women's soccer team to a 6-0 victory over Rhode Island College in a non-conference game on Oct. 16.

The Owls re-set a school record by registering their seventh consecutive shutout; they allowed just six goals in their first 14 games this season.

Miller scored the game-winning goal in the 12th minute to tie the record and her second goal in the 60th minute to break the single-season scoring mark.

Heading into Senior Day on Oct. 20, Miller had 44 points (18 goals, eight assists) this season. She had shared the previous single-season record of 42 points with Meg Gearin.

In addition, Miller was one shy of Westfield's single season record for goals (Gearin scored 19 goals in 2009) and two points shy of the career scoring record. Miller had 114 career points, trailing Sandy Pinto '98), a Ludlow native who was inducted in the Westfield State Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 19.

Miller also ranked fifth nationally with eight game-winning goals this season heading into action on Oct. 13.

The other half of the "M&M Girls" from Ludlow, senior forward Brittanie McGregor, tallied five points versus Rhode Island College with a goal and three assists. McGregor is Westfield's second leading scorer with 29 points (nine goals, 11 assists) and moved into 10th place on the Owls' all-time scoring list with 70 points as of press time.

Donaruma ties Keene State field hockey assist record

KEENE, NH Junior Aimee Donaruma of Hampden tied a school record with four assists to lead the Keene State College field hockey team to a 6-2 Little East Conference victory over WSU on Oct. 17.

The performance tied the mark set by Deb Hersey against Rivier College in 1981.

"Aimee played well," Keene State head coach Amy Watson said. "She's our center midfielder, so she needs to be everywhere offensively and defensively."

HCC, STCC end season with tie

HOLYOKE The Holyoke Community College men's soccer team concluded its regular season with a 4-4 tie against rival Springfield Technical Community College. The two squads seemed to trade goals throughout the match with freshman forward Shaun Mello of Ludlow leading the way for the Cougars with two goals and an assist.

Monette assists goal in heartbreaker for WSU

PROVIDENCE, RI Senior defender Chris Monette of Wilbraham registered an assist in the WSU men's soccer team's 2-1 loss to Rhode Island College in which they gave up the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

Kish's helpers not enough for MCLA volleyball

WESTFIELD Sophomore setter Brittany Kish of East Longmeadow registered 13 assists for the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) women's volleyball team, but WSU rallied from a huge first-set deficit in a 3-0 sweep (26-24, 25-13, 25-13) over their conference rival on Oct. 16.

WSU wins WNE Invitational

SPRINGFIELD Wilbraham's Abby Monette finished ninth as the WSU women's cross country team won the Western New England University (WNE) Invitational on Oct. 13.

Elms College junior Kerry Ashe of Springfield also recorded a personal best at 24:07.78 for the 5K course while fellow Springfield natives Emma Bernard and Meghan Sullivan added significant time drops of 23:43.38 and 26:07.88, respectively.

On the men's side, Elms College junior Jesse Zina of Ludlow completed the men's 8-kilometer course in a time of 32:03.81.

Bartnik keys huge upset for WNE men's soccer

ONEONTA, NY East Longmeadow's Jake Bartnik scored in the 28th minute to stake the WNE men's soccer team to a shocking 2-0 lead and the Golden Bears held on for a 2-1 upset of Final Four participant State University of New York at Oneonta on Oct. 14.

WNE golf finishes third at Westfield State Invitational

WESTFIELD ­ Wilbraham's Steve Langlois shot a 79 as the WNE men's golf team shot a 319 to tie Endicott College for third place at the nine-team Westfield State Invitational at the Tekoa Country Club on Oct. 13.

Brady scores in 2-1 win

NORTH ADAMS Dan Brady of Wilbraham scored in the 57th minute as the WSU men's soccer team posted a hard-fought 2-1 victory over MCLA on Oct. 13
