Minnechaug’s Greco named 2013 Scholastic All-American

July 31, 2013
WILBRAHAM – Christiana Greco, a member of the Minnechaug Regional High School Class of 2013, was recently named a Scholastic All-America by USA Swimming.

This recognition requires a 3.5 GPA for the entire academic year and achievement of a cutoff time in an individual event.

Greco’s 2013 Western Massachusetts championship winning 100-yard butterfly time of 57.19 made the cut (57.27).

“The cutoff times are quite fast, so to earn this distinction is tremendously challenging,” Erik Mandell, Minnechaug head coach, said. “I am quite proud of Christiana, and of the fact that she is now the third Minnechaug swimmer in the last two years to earn the Scholastic All-America Award from USA Swimming.”

Minnechaug graduates Michael Normoyle and Wiktor Karpinski were also honored in 2012.

Pereira qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship

SPRINGFIELD – Recent American International College graduate Nate Pereira of Ludlow tied for second at the 2013 U.S. Amateur Sectional Qualifier at the par-72 Crestview Country Club in Agawam, and in doing so qualified to compete at the U.S. Amateur Championship in August.

Pereira recorded two birdies and two bogies in the first round on his way to an even-par score of 72 before tallying four birdies with just one bogey for a three-under par second round score of 69. Four of his six birdies came on par-fives, including two on the 553-yard second hole.

The 2013 U.S. Amateur Championship will take place Aug. 12 to 18 at The Country Club in Brookline, which will feature two rounds of stroke play that will narrow the field to 64 match play competitors. The first three rounds of match play will be aired on the Golf Channel August 14 to 16, while the semifinal and championships matches will air on NBC August 17 to 18.
