Morton, Suckau win silver in tune up

Heather Morton
Cape Cod was the site of the 20th annual ISI District Championships June 24-27. Four local figure skaters made the trip to the Cape. The purpose of this competition was to find the best skaters in Massachusetts in their respective age brackets and divisions. Heather Morton of East Longmeadow and Tylar Anne Suckau of West Springfield both brought home silver medals.

The skaters used this competition as sort of a "warm up" for a much larger event happening in July.

For the next few weeks, these girls and their fellow FMC Ice Sports club members will be gearing up for the 30th annual ISI World Championships which will take place July 26-31 at the New England Sports Center in Marlboro.

Skaters from all across the world will be converging on the Boston area for this week-long event. FMC Ice Sports in Springfield is excited to be sending 25 skaters to this event. Some of the skaters are veteran competitors, while a few have only been skating since September. Eight year olds Irina Malladi of Holyoke and Aaliyah Pimentel of Springfield are excited to participate in this event .

"I can't wait to skate by best", Irina said; while Aaliyah commented "I wonder if I will meet skaters from other countries".

For those skaters who attended this event the last time it came to Boston, back in 2006, they know what fun it will be.

"I have attended Worlds twice and both times I medaled and met skaters from other countries. It was exciting to have the opportunity to skate against skaters from areas that we normally would not be able to skate against," commented Ashley Assad of Wilbraham, who is now an FMC Ice Sports coach and will be competing in a Team event at the upcoming competition.

A cruise on Boston Harbor, an ice show featuring some of the best competitors in the competition and guest skaters, as well as a pizza party and trading pins are just a few of the events that the competitors will be able to attend.

This competition is an annual event which is usually held somewhere in the United States each summer.
