Murray, WNE offensive line honored by D3football.com

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Western New England University (WNE) junior De'Quan Murray of Springfield is part of the Golden Bears' starting offensive line that was named the D3football.com/Scoutware Team of the Week on Nov. 6, thanks to their protection ability during a 38-12 New England Football Conference – Boyd Division win against University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

The line helped the Golden Bears achieve a season-high 267 yards on the ground in that game, 94 yards above its average, with 4.7 yards per carry. Kevin Cook rushed for 125 yards for his fifth 100-yard game in 2012. Also, the quintet gave quarterback John Krafick time to complete 16 passes to nine receivers without being sacked.

Berthiaume named D3hoops.com All-American

SPRINGFIELD – Springfield College's Alex Berthiaume received some preseason recognition as he was selected to the D3hoops.com preseason All-America team. The senior guard was one of 25 players recognized and was named to the preseason All-America fourth team.

Last season, in his first year at Springfield after transferring from St. Michael's, Berthiaume was named a D3Hoops.com First Team All-Northeast All-Star. He also was tabbed the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year after powering Springfield to the NEWMAC Championship game and a 17-10 overall record.

A native of Springfield, Berthiaume has proven himself as one of the most dynamic offensive weapons in the nation. He led the conference in both total points (519) and points per game (19.2) as he scored at least 20 points in 14 games while reaching the 30-point plateau three times.

Berthiaume also ranked second in the league in steals (43) and third in assists (92). A very durable player for head coach Charlie Brock, he led the league in minutes per game, logging 34.8 minutes of action per contest.

Vital earns spot on NEWMAC second team

BABSON PARK – Hailing from Ludlow, Springfield College's Nina Vital was one of the Pride's key offensive weapons this season, earning her a spot on the NEWMAC women's soccer second team. She led the team with 24 points, coming off 10 goals and four assists. Dependable on offense all season, her 10 goals were third highest in the league this season. In the NEWMAC championship, despite not playing all game with an injury, she hammered in the game-winning penalty kick.

Brady scores as WSU takes MASCAC crown

SALEM – Dan Brady of Wilbraham scored one of the Westfield State University (WSU) men's soccer team's three goals in a 3-0 upset win over top-seeded Salem State University to claim the 2012 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer championship on Nov. 4.

Phillips wins twice as Pride tops Smith College

NORTHAMPTON – East Longmeadow's Callie Phillips motored to first place in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:19.46 and also swam the fastest time of the evening in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.29 as the Springfield College women's swimming and diving team breezed past NEWMAC foe Smith College, 171-117, in a dual meet on Nov. 6.

Medina starts season off strong

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Senior tri-captain Anthony Medina won three matches as the WNE wrestling team opened the 2012-13 season on Nov. 3 at the King's College Monarch Invitational, scoring 17-1/2 points for 10th place out of 12 teams.

Szydlowski finishes college career with strong effort

WESTFIELD – WSU senior cornerback Mike Szydlowski of Wilbraham intercepted a pass, broke up two others and recorded five tackles as the Owls registered a 14-9 victory over Fitchburg State in the regular season football finale on Nov. 3.
