SPRINGFIELD With the hot summer season on the way, the non-profit Springfield Paddle Club, one of the Western Massachusetts region's oldest public swim clubs, invites the public to sign up for the summer 2010 swimming season.
2010 memberships are available for the Springfield Paddle Club, nestled along the shore of secluded Bass Pond on South Branch Parkway in the heart of Springfield's Sixteen Acres neighborhood.
On June 26, the club will be hosting an open house potluck event from noon to 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend; and members may bring guests free of charge. Rain date is June 27.
The swim club features a long sandy white beach, lifeguard-protected swim area, floating dock, wooded picnic and barbecue areas, bath house and plentiful parking. Families with children, couples or individuals are welcome to join.
Founded in 1933, the Springfield Paddle Club is the one of the oldest continually operated public swim clubs in the region. It hugs the northern shore of the 11-acre Bass Pond.
"Fed via a natural underground spring, Bass Pond is a convenient and easily accessible swim location for families in Springfield and throughout the region," Paddle Club President Bob Wool said. "It's a wonderful place for everyone to enjoy we actively encourage new memberships, and anyone is welcome to apply."
The club is open daytime hours, seven days a week, during the season.
Interested persons should call Elly Magnacca at 782-0312 for more information about joining or to visit the club. Individuals or families must sign up in advance before they will be permitted to swim.
