Phillips named NEWMAC Women's Swimmer of the Week

BABSON PARK – Callie Phillips was selected as the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Women's Swimmer of the Week for the first time in her career on Jan. 7.

Phillips was a key reason why Springfield was able to topple both Hartwick and Union on Jan. 5 in a tri-meet. The East Longmeadow native was tremendous as she picked up three victories, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:59.41, touching first in the 200-yard individual medley (IM) in 2:14.04, and taking the 500-yard freestyle in 5:14.97.

Phillips followed up the award with a strong showing against New York University (NYU) as she won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.54 and had the top time in the 200-yard IM after touching in 2:15.30.

Bronner garners conference honor with two goals

BUZZARDS BAY – Wilbraham's Phil Bronner, a senior forward on the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Dartmouth men's hockey team, netted a pair of goals in the Corsairs' 5-4 victory at Worcester State to earn a spot on the Jan. 13 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) honor roll.

Homich named to MASCAC honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY – Elisha Homich of Ludlow, a senior guard for the Bridgewater State University women's basketball team, earned a spot on the MASCAC honor roll; it was announced on Jan. 13.

Homich averaged 24.7 points, four assists and 2.3 steals in a 3-0 week for the Bears, including 26 points and five steals in a 92-67 victory at Framingham State to go with 24 points in a 63-47 triumph over Westfield State. She shot 57 percent (24-for-42) from field and 50 percent (10-for-20) from behind arc for the week.

Monts named NECC Rookie of the Week

SPRINGFIELD – Jordan Monts of Springfield was named the New England Collegiate Conference Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week on Jan. 10.

Monts averaged a team-high 12.5 points in a two game week for the Pride. The freshman guard shot 80 percent from the field and put up 12 points, while adding nine rebounds and two steals in a loss to Lesley on Jan. 8. Monts followed up that performance by recording a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and also adding an assist in a loss to Elms on Jan. 12.

Grippo impressive in Elms swimming victories

BRIDGEWATER – James Grippo of Longmeadow recorded three individual first place finishes in the 50-yard backstroke (28.39), the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.67) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:32.27) and also teamed up with East Longmeadow's Andrew Pioggia as part of a winning 200-yard medley relay team as the Elms College men's swimming and diving team posted a 162-121 victory over Bridgewater State University on Jan. 9.

Emalee Furtek of Ludlow won the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard freestyle events with respective times of 1:07.35 and 1:01.20 and powered to top honors in the 50-yard butterfly (29.14) in a losing effort for the women's team.

Grippo also touched the wall first in the 1650-yard freestyle (19:14.19) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:19.98) as the men's team posted a 105-54 victory over Mount Saint Mary College on Jan. 12.

Furtek claimed second place in both the 200-yard IM and the 200-yard butterfly with respective times of 2:39.17 and 2:42.04 for the women, who fell 114-88.

Medina captures major decision

SPRINGFIELD – Western New England University wrestling's senior tri-captain Anthony Medina of Springfield at earned a major decision at 149 pounds, but Southern Maine swept the Golden Bears in a rare non-conference wrestling doubleheader, 31-18 and 28-23, on Jan. 12.

Normoyle registers three wins

SPRINGFIELD – Michael Normoyle of Springfield continued to deliver for the Springfield College men's swimming and diving team, capturing the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:00.04 and the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:12.43. The first-year also swam the fastest time in the 200- yard IM with a 2:01.94 in a 164-123 over NYU on Jan. 12.

Homich leads Bridgewater State past WSU

BRIDGEWATER – Sophomore center Gabby Felix of Springfield paced the Westfield State University women's basketball team with a double-double as she notched 11 points and 12 rebounds, but senior guard Elisha Homich of Ludlow poured in a game-high 24 points to lead Bridgewater State University to a 63-47 win on Jan. 12.

Foster posts strong performance at Yale Invitational

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Senior Sanya Foster of Springfield, Mass., placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 12.36 meters and placed eighth in the weight throw with a toss of 13.17 meters as the American International College (AIC) women's track and field team competed at the Yale Invitational on Jan. 12.

Ferrentino strong in heartbreaking loss

SPRINGFIELD – East Longmeadow's Krista Ferrentino finished with a double-double to lead AIC, scoring 27 points on 11-of-20 shooting from the field and a 5-for-7 performance at the line to go with a game-high 11 boards as the AIC women's basketball team led for virtually the entire second half but could not hold on as visiting UMass Lowell edged the Yellow Jackets 74-73 on Jan. 9.

She also netted nine points with six boards in a 57-39 win over Saint Anselm College on Jan. 12.
