Schmidt earns second-straight diving honor |
|
WESTFIELD Kim Schmidt of Longmeadow won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions as the Westfield State (WSU) women’s swimming and diving team topped Plymouth State 164-113 on Dec. 10.
The performance earned the senior the distinction of Little East Conference diver of the week for the second straight week.
Felix’s sparks WSU off the bench
WESTFIELD Freshman center Gabby Felix of Springfield was the only player to reach double figures with 11 points off the bench for the WSU women’s basketball team in a 63-37 loss to Salve Regina on Dec. 10.
She followed up that effort by scoring eight of her 10 points in the opening six minutes to spark the Owls to a 54-47 victory over the University of Massachusetts Boston on Dec. 13.
Berthiaume continues to lead Springfield College
NEW LONDON, CONN. Alex Berthiaume of Springfield poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Springfield College men’s basketball to a 52-44 victory at Connecticut College on Dec. 13. Berthiaume was 6-for-16 from the field but converted 3-of-6 shots from long distance and 7-of-8 shots from the charity stripe.
All-New England team announced
CHICOPEE Elms College sophomore midfielder Gianna Gorneault of Springfield was named Third Team All-New England Region as recently announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America for women’s soccer.
Foster sets AIC record
CAMBRIDGE Junior Sanya Foster of Springfield placed second in the shot put with a school-record throw of 12.74 meters for the American International College (AIC) women’s indoor track and field team at the Harvard Open on Dec. 10.
She also took 17th in the weight throw with a toss of 11.55 meters
WNE grapplers take third
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. Junior Anthony Medina of Springfield continued his fine early season performance for the Western New England wrestling team by finishing third in the 141 pound weight class at the Long Island Open “Takedown for Autism” Tournament on Dec. 10.
Junior Tom Caliento of Longmeadow took third in the 165-pound weight class.
