Schmidt receives Contributions to Athletics Award

WESTFIELD — Westfield State University senior Kim Schmidt, a standout diver on the Owls' swimming and diving team for the past four years, was a recipient of the university's prestigious Contributions to Athletics Award that was presented at the annual varsity sports banquet.

The Longmeadow resident earned two All-America honorable mention certificates in the one- and three-meter diving events at this year's NCAA Division III swimming and diving national championships to become the Westfield swimming and diving program's first All-American since 1991.

She was an eight-time New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association champion and earned the association's diver of the year honors for four consecutive years. Her diving exploits led the Westfield State team to top-10 New England finishes in each of the past four years, including fifth place in 2010.

Schmidt was a two-time conference diver of the year and shattered school records in six diving events. She also holds the conference and New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association records for both the one- and three-meter diving events.

Izzo named to Division III PING All-Mid-Atlantic team

WASHINGTON, Pa. — The 2012 Division III PING All-Region Men's Golf Teams were announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America and Washington & Jefferson College sophomore Colin Izzo of Longmeadow earned a selection to the Mid-Atlantic Team.

Izzo was one of 12 golfers selected from the region and was the only Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) player recognized.

Izzo finished his second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on May 16 with a two-over-par score of 74 on the El Campeon course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Izzo carded four birdies during his second round.

Izzo's second-round score of 74 was tied for the fifth-lowest round in the clubhouse on the El Campeon course.

The April 10 Presidents' Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week owns a 76.4 stroke average in 19 competitive rounds this year. He shot a season-low 72 at the Carnegie Mellon Fall Invitational at Longue Vue Country Club in Pittsburgh. Izzo was named to the All-PAC First Team after a fourth-place finish at the conference championship. He was also the eighth-place finisher at the Mid-Atlantic Regional hosted at Hershey Country Club.

Last season, Izzo averaged 77.6 shots in a team-high tying 20 rounds. He tied for fourth place at the 2011 PAC Championship Tournament.

UMass Boston's Bouyea named to All-Little East second team

NORTH DARTMOUTH — After a tremendous spring campaign, sophomore center fielder Natalia Bouyea was named a member of the Little East All-Conference second team on May 15.

Bouyea earned her first postseason award after serving as the Beacons' best outfielder and improving upon a stellar offensive year at the plate. She was easily the best University of Massachusetts Boston outfielder, with almost limitless range in center field and a team-high five outfield assists.

At the plate, the East Longmeadow native hit a career-best .287, while driving in six runs and scoring 15 times. Bouyea added 27 hits and finished tied for third with four doubles on the season while posting a .368 on-base percentage and .330 slugging percentage.

Reardon, Martin named to All-NEILA team

SPRINGFIELD — James Reardon of Longmeadow was one of seven Western New England University (WNE) men's lacrosse players to be named to the 2012 All-New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Team on May 17, earning first team honors.

Face-off specialist Joe Martin of Springfield was a second team honoree.

WNE posted a 13-5 record for the program's ninth consecutive winning season. The Golden Bears placed first in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a perfect 7-0 mark and captured the CCC Championship for the third time in five years.

WNE, which was ranked 15th in the latest USILA Division II Poll, also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship.

Calabrese named to All-NEWMAC second team

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield College baseball team's sophomore third baseman Frank Calabrese of East Longmeadow was named second team All-New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference on May 10.

Calabrese, a business management major, was 11th in the league with a .338 batting average.

Foster takes third at New England Championships

CAMBRIDGE — American International College's (AIC) Junior Sanya Foster of Springfield placed third in the shot put with a throw of 13.70 meters as the women's track and field team finished 16th of 35 scoring teams with 20 points at the New England Championships on May 12, placing it fourth among NCAA Division II programs.

Pereira, LeBlanc named 2012-13 AIC golf team captains

SPRINGFIELD — AIC head men's golf coach Gary Ensor recently announced that rising senior Nate Pereira of Ludlow and rising junior Tommy LeBlanc of Springfield have been named captains of the AIC men's golf team for the 2012-13 season.
