SC men's gymnastics, women's lacrosse excelled in classroom in 2012

SPRINGFIELD — The Springfield College SC men's gymnastics team finished fourth in the nation as a team in the College Gymnastics Association listings academically in 2012. In addition, SC senior Alex McCabe was among 12 student-athletes named First Team All-American Scholar-Athlete with a GPA of 3.9 or above.

From a team standpoint, SC finished with a 3.163 GPA, fourth among all men's gymnastics teams in the country. William & Mary took the academic crown with a 3.53 team GPA, followed by Temple (3.479), Minnesota (3.204), Springfield (3.163), and Stanford (3.104). The second five included Michigan (3.096), Nebraska (3.083), Penn State (3.078), Army (3.058), and Oklahoma (2.982).

The women's lacrosse team was recognized as a 2012 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association Academic Squad for their success in the classroom last year.

To qualify for recognition, teams had to have achieved a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the 2011-2012 academic year. Sixteen of the teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Championship were named Academic Squads.

The Pride was one of 61 teams from across the nation to earn the honor. Including Springfield, the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference had five teams recognized.

Elms men's basketball to host skills clinics



CHICOPEE — The Elms College men's basketball program recently announced its "Grow Your Game" fall clinic dates beginning on Sept. 16 on the campus of Elms College.

The clinics will take place on five Sundays during the fall, including Sept. 16, 23 and 30, and Oct. 7 and 14. Cost of the clinic is $25 per day or $100 for all five.

Each clinic date will consist of two sessions: Session 1: Boys and girls grades two to six from 9 to 10:30 a.m.; and Session 2: Boys and girls grades seven to 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Each session will be directed by Todd Dean, Blazers' head men's basketball coach, and his coaching staff, as well as current members of Elms' 2012-13 squad. Areas covered during the clinics include ball handling and dribbling, shooting technique and drills, footwork, passing and point guard play, finishing the play, speed, agility and quickness.

The Elms College baseball program will host its fall prospect clinic on Sept. 30 at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke from 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The clinic is for players ages 15 to 18 and the cost is $75 per participant.

The format for the day will include instruction, skill evaluation and a modified game. All participants will also receive a camp T-shirt.

WESTFIELD — The Westfield State University varsity field hockey team is hosting a clinic for youth in grades 3 through 8 on Sept. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Westfield State's Alumni Field. National Field Hockey Day.
