SPRINGFIELD — The Western New England College athletics department is grieving the loss of martial arts coach Kevin Andrews who passed away unexpectedly on Dec. 17.

A native of Springfield who graduated from Commerce High School and Springfield Technical Community College, Andrews coached the Golden Bears for the past 23 years and was widely regarded as one of the best martial arts teachers in the region. He served as an assistant coach during the 1985-86 school year.

Since 1970, Andrews' training has included Kenpo Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Ashihara Karate and Hung Gar Kung Fu.

"Kevin was a close and personal friend, and a hard worker for his team," Western New England College Athletics Director Mike Theulen said. "He was a great representative for our department. His passing is a very shocking loss."

A memorial service for Andrews took place on Dec. 30 at Alden Baptist Church in Springfield.

Andrews worked at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield and was an EMT instructor at Springfield College.
