WNEC's David Doiron named to "ESPN: the Magazine" Academic All-America Football Team

SPRINGFIELD Western New England College (WNEC) junior David Doiron of Plainville received a major award on Nov. 26 after being named to the 2008 ESPN the Magazine College Division Academic All-America Football Team.

Doiron, an offensive guard, was voted to the National Academic Second Team after compiling a 3.97 cumulative grade-point-average in Economics.

He is the first player in program history named to the honor squad, which is selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Doiron was among only three New England players earning a spot on the squad joining the MIT duo of senior tight end Thomas Franklin of Independence, Mo., and junior defensive lineman Alex Rubino of Sparta, N.J.

Franklin (4.00 in Aerospace Engineering) was a First-Team selection while Rubino (4.00 in Chemical Engineering) was a Second-Team pick.

Doiron, Franklin and Rubino all compete for teams in the New England Football Conference (NEFC).

Doiron helped anchor the Golden Bears' offensive line that finished fifth among 16 teams in the conference in passing offense (200.2 average) and eighth in scoring (25.6 points per game).

On Nov. 24, he was selected to the All-NEFC Boyd Division Second Team.

Doiron participates in the school's NCAA CHAMPS Life Skills program and clinics hosted by the Golden Bears' squad, and is a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity.

Doiron is a 2006 graduate of King Phillip High School where he served as captain of the football and wrestling teams while earning a varsity letter in track/field. He was was named the Hockomock League Scholar-Athlete.

WNEC posted a 3-7 record this fall, but finished the season on a strong note by winning three of its final five contests.

The Golden Bears tied for fourth in the NEFC Boyd Division with a 3-4 mark.
