WESTFIELD The Westfield State University athletics department and its student-athletes donated more than $1,000 this past academic year to the Cancer House of Hope in Westfield.
The Cancer House of Hope provides support services for people with cancer and their families, and in 2011 it merged with the Center for Human Development as together they lead the charge in human services in Central and Western Massachusetts and Northern Connecticut.
The major contributor was the Westfield State University men's ice hockey, which sold pink game jerseys and raised more than $500.
The student-athletes also raised money at their teams' "Think Pink" events. All Westfield State University varsity sports teams participated with women's basketball leading the way with more than $250 in donations.
"We thank the friends and families of the teams for their donations, and the teams did an excellent job of coordinating the events and promoting breast cancer awareness," said Nancy Bals, Westfield State University associate athletics director. "We are very pleased to assist the Cancer House of Hope as they reach out to the most vulnerable in our communities to improve the quality of life for those they serve."
