WESTFIELD The Westfield State University athletics department delivered more 75 Christmas gifts to two local elementary schools on Dec. 21.
For the sixth consecutive year, the university's Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB) and athletics department raised $500 to buy gifts for children of families in need. This year the group is serving as a "Secret Santa" to 20 children.
Barbara Trant of the Volunteers in Public Schools program noted, "The schools see many families that are struggling in these challenging times. We are grateful for the kindness and support the students from the Student-Athlete Advisory Board are able to give to them."
SAAB consists of two student-athletes from each of Westfield's 21 varsity sports teams. It is a leadership board of about 40 students who focus on community service, student leadership, and assisting the administration with programming for student-athletes.
"Wrapping and sorting all these gifts, it warms your heart,"
said Nancy Bals, Westfield State University associate athletics director. "You can't help but think about the situations these children might be in. We are happy to help make their holiday special."
