Springfield Museums announce holiday vacation programs

SPRINGFIELD – The Springfield Museums have announced their slate of activities for the upcoming holiday vacation week.

Visitors can enjoy a combination of fun activities, planetarium shows, and performances by some of the region’s best family performers, as well as the popular Holiday Magic gingerbread exhibit at the Springfield Science Museum.

“A Week of Superheroes” events kick-off on Dec. 26, with all four Springfield Museums open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., plus activities at the Hasbro Games Art Discovery Center and shows at the Seymour Planetarium.

On Dec. 27, the activities and events shift into high gear with Talking Hands Theater presenting Little Superheroes at 1 pm.

Performances on subsequent days will include:
• Dec. 28, 1 p.m. – Animal World Experience presents Wild Heroes. Children will get the opportunity to meet several animals and learn about their special abilities that make them a hero in their own way.
• Dec. 29, 1 p.m.  – Tanglewood Marionettes perform Perseus and Medusa. A lavish show featuring beautiful, hand-crafted marionettes, scrolling sets, exotic music and much, much more.
• Dec. 30, 1 p.m. – Cardboard Explosion! by Puppet Showplace Theater’s resident artist Brad Shur. Get ready to outsmart dragons, choose-your-own superpower, and train adorable animal sidekicks in this fun, energetic, participatory show.
Other program highlights include:
• Dec. 30, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Bam! Bam! Japan! An Anime and Manga Mini-Con presented by the Springfield Conservatory of the Arts featuring artist demonstrations, cosplay, Japanese calligraphy and more.
• Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. – Meet Michelangelo, the wisecracking goof of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team, plus Spider-Man, Black Widow and others. Also, Ninja Turtle Face Painting.
• Wednesday and Thursday, 2 to 4 p.m. – Create and develop a comic or graphic novel.
• Tuesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Meet the turtles of the Springfield Science Museum.

“A Week of Superheroes” is part of the Museums’ Family Fun series, supported by the TD Charitable Foundation.

Admission prices are $18 for adults, $12 for seniors and college students, $9.50 for children 3-17, and free for children under three and museum members. The fee provides access to all four museums.

General admission is free for Springfield residents with proof of address.
