Now that summer is over, I'm starting to think of my next vacation. OK, I admit that I'm always thinking of my next vacation, and France is on my mind as a great option. The country is very diverse and a trip of a lifetime. With the history, art and of course, great wine, it appeals to all. A great way to experience France is onboard a river cruise.
Viking River Cruises offers three different itineraries in France. Paris and the Heart of Normandy
is a history buff's dream, and we were lucky to have the opportunity to take this trip a couple of years ago. Combine the magic of Paris with
the beauty of France's Norman countryside and, voila! Experience history firsthand at the Normandy beaches, site of the famous Allied invasion on D-Day in 1944. Enjoy the Gothic architecture of Rouen and see where Joan of Arc was tried and executed. You can lose yourself in the exquisite gardens of Giverny, whose beautiful colors inspired Impressionist Claude Monet for many years. Walk the cobblestone streets of provincial Vernon and of course there is magnificent Paris, the world's most romantic city!
Portraits of Southern France
offers a lovely scenic cruise along the Saone and Rhone Rivers passing some of the most beautiful vistas the French
countryside has to offer. During the 8-day journey explore the famed region of Burgundy and the lavender fields of Provence. Visit the
Gallo-Roman ruins in both Vienne and Arles: walk the streets of Arles to see how it inspired Vincent van Gogh. Visit the historic Papal Palace in Avignon, the "City of the Popes" Learn about the regions time-honored wine making traditions, sample Burgundy varietals and try the world-famous cuisine in Lyon.
Their last cruise is France's Finest
which combines much of the first two cruises. This special cruise is 15 days from Paris to Avignon.
