After a recent trip to Playa del Carmen and Cancun, we still have visions of the blue skies, endless white sand beaches, and turquoise waters dancing in our heads.
This is the perfect vacation for the beach bum, as well as those who crave adventure and activity. Recharge your batteries by spending your day under a palapa on the beach or by the pool, or if you ever get tired of that, here are just a few other ideas for you. The typical water sports abound, but you can also try flying over the water in a water-propelled jetpack; take a jungle tour; go zip lining; visit one of the many Mayan Archeological sites in the area to see the ruins; swim in a crystal clear cenote
or underground river.
The hotel zone in Cancun is located along a wide stretch of white sand beach, with many hotels located along the strip. We stayed at the Iberostar Cancun, where all rooms have oceanview and overlook the pool area with 7 pools including an infinity pool, stretching from the hotel to the beach. What a spectacular view to wake up to every day!
The public bus is the best way to travel in Cancun, with buses arriving every few minutes, taking you up and down the strip and downtown for only $8.50 pesos (under $1.00 US). Cancun is famous for nightlife, and will not disappoint the most hearty party-goer.
Playa del Carmen is a 45 minute ride from the Cancun airport. Here you can choose one of the many all-inclusive hotels located along the beach, offering a more secluded and quieter atmosphere than the hotel zone in Cancun. We stayed at the Paradissus La Esmerlda, which just opened a year ago, where we enjoyed the immaculate and beautifully landscaped grounds, huge modern suites, pools, 10 restaurants, sparkling white sand beach, and top-notch service always delivered with a smile.
Fifth Avenue is the tourist hub of Playa, open only to pedestrian traffic and offering a huge array of both touristy and upscale shopping, open air restaurants and bars, as well as a few boutiquey hotels. Don’t expect to find the great shopping bargains that Cozumel offers-most of what you will find here is pretty pricey. The area really comes alive at night when everyone leaves the beaches to head into town for some fun, and around 11pm the night clubs come to life until the wee hours of the morning.
