Addiction Recovery Team offers diverse expertise

GREATER SPRINGFIELD The Addiction Recovery Team at Wing Memorial Hospital's Griswold Behavioral Health Center offers a wide variety of expertise including working with patients who have the co-occurring disorders of substance abuse and mental health.
The team is led by James Leyden, LICSW, Clinical Supervisor, who brings more than 25 years of experience in working addicted and dually-diagnosed patients. Leyden has either worked or been in a leadership position in each level of care offered in the Substance Abuse Treatment Continuum. The Addiction/Co-occurring Disorders team is comprised of independently licensed clinicians, with a full range of skill and experience in helping patients recover from these disorders.
"Addiction touches millions of families in America, changing the lives of not just the addict but everyone around them," Leyden said. "We work from a patient-centered perspective, partnering with them to create a treatment plan that meets their specific needs. One of the best rewards found in this work is seeing folks re-united with their families, and moving toward full a full, productive and meaningful life."
The team offers a full range of treatment options including opiate- replacement strategies such as Suboxone, Methadone and Vivitrol; family therapy; treatment of adolescents who are abusing or have become addicted. The staff is fully versed in the 12-step recovery model. The Addiction Recovery Team offers a supportive environment and works closely with its medical team to assist in pharmacologic management.
The program serves patients experiencing a variety of addictions and behavioral health concerns who come from a many different backgrounds. The Addiction Recovery Team is skilled in offering a range of therapeutic interventions that focus on understanding the specific concerns of each patient and working them to achieve their specific treatment goals.
The Addiction Recovery Team also offers strong expertise in the treatment of adolescents. Bill Cosgriff, PhD., recently joined the team and has more than 35 years of experience working with at risk and addicted youth in the Springfield school system. He was instrumental in developing the Springfield Recovery High School and was recently recognized for his service by the National Association of Addiction and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) and presented with the 2012 Mel Schulstad Professional of the Year award.
"Bill brings great experience to our team," Leyden said who in addition to the time he spends on the care of his patients is also focusing on a variety of outreach initiatives in the community to build awareness about the services offered at Wing Memorial Hospital's Griswold Behavioral Health Center. By building strong connections in the community, the team is continuously engaged with other agencies, providers, and support networks to help address the growing and ongoing needs of those dealing with addiction.
