|SPRINGFIELD The American Cancer Society's Look Good... Feel Better program is a unique event designed to help patients maintain their personal appearance while undergoing treatment for cancer. The free program features cosmetologists leading group sessions, providing tips and practical techniques for coping with hair loss and changes in the skin that often result from chemotherapy or radiation therapy.|
There will be a Look Good... Feel Better session on May 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the D'Amour Cancer Center in Springfield. Pre-registration is required. To register, please call Sara Mutch at 493-2155.
Look Good... Feel Better offers free, one-time beauty consultations with a licensed cosmetologist or aesthetician to women who are currently undergoing cancer treatment. "Look Good... Feel Better is as much about improving and maintaining self-image and confidence as it is about appearance," said Crystal Brown, Community Executive for Health Initiatvies for the American Cancer Society. "Patients enjoy the opportunity to spend time in a relaxed setting with others in the same situation. And the free make-up and instruction from professionals helps them look and feel better."
The American Cancer Society estimates that approximately 662,870 American women will develop some form of cancer this year. The good news is that, thanks to advances in medicine, the five-year relative survival rate of all cancers is 65 percent.
A variety of patient services, support programs and comprehensive cancer information are available through the society's toll free 1-800-ACS-2345 number, which operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in both English and Spanish and on its Web site at www.cancer.org.
The American Cancer Society is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by saving lives, diminishing suffering, and preventing cancer through research, education, advocacy and service. Founded in 1913 and with national headquarters in Atlanta, the society has 14 regional divisions and local offices in 3,400 communities, involving millions of volunteers across the United States.
