Baystate VNA and Hospice looking for volunteers
Baystate VNA and Hospice is currently taking applications to participate in a free Volunteer Training Course. Baystate Hospice, a member of Baystate Health, is a non-profit agency serving the Greater Springfield area and surrounding towns in Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester counties. Hospice care involves a team-approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support tailored to the patient's needs.
Hospice volunteers provide two or more hours of time a week lending support, and practical help. Volunteers usually take one patient at a time and work with that patient throughout the course of the illness; providing companionship, errands, transportation and respite for families.
Hospice care is provided in a person's home or long term care facility. Volunteers that enjoy the elderly are especially invited to explore this opportunity to make a difference in a deeply meaningful way for those living in nursing homes.
Hospice is also seeking volunteer therapists training in therapeutic massage, reiki and music therapy. Experience has shown that these therapies lessen agitation and bring peace and comfort to patients.
Volunteers are required to attend a 20-hour evening training course. Plenty of support, education and comradeship will be provided. Contact Caroline Stanton, Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, at 794-6472 for an application and interview.
