SPRINGFIELD – Big Y Supermarkets is hosting book signings by Chet Galaska, author of “Living on a Tightrope: Coping with Diabetes.”
Galaska was in Chicago when famed Cubs player Ron Santo was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Santo had diabetes and local publications recounted episodes related to his struggles with it in the 1960’s.
Galaska said, “They were great stories but only those who understood diabetes could appreciate them. When I got home I talked to others about Santo and found there is rampant misunderstanding of both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, even among many diabetics themselves.”
In researching the book, he discovered several reasons for this. First, typical books on diabetes are dry, uninteresting and difficult to absorb. Second, information on the web can be hard to put together and even contradictory. Third, old wives’ tales are still rampant, and much of what people believe is simply not true. Finally, the time constraints doctors are under can impair their capacity to explain the complexities.
Galaska discovered that spouses and others who live with diabetics need information, too. The book includes a chapter titled “Unsung Heroes” that gives credit to those who offer support and can be affected by the disease almost as much as their diabetic loved ones.
“Living on a Tightrope: Coping with Diabetes” is written in a reader friendly way for a general audience that truly needs to know the facts. Additional information is available at www.livingonatightrope.com
