|CHICOPEE For two years in a row the students and staff at Sgt. Robert R. Litwin Elementary School have pulled together to raise money for International American Red Cross efforts. |
Last year, they donated more than $1,000 for Haiti and now more than $750 for the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami. After learning of the devastation in Japan, the students conducted a two-day quarter drive to raise money to contribute to the relief efforts.
On March 28, Litwin Elementary School students presented Dawn Leaks, American Red Cross Pioneer Valley Chapter's assistant director of Chapter Support in Springfield, with a donation of more than $750.
"It's amazing what these students were able to do in just two days and we are truly thankful for their generosity," Leaks said.
The American Red Cross has provided $500,000 in funding to the World Food Programme for logistical support to the Government of Japan for the delivery and storage of relief items. The American Red Cross has also committed an initial $10 million to the Japanese Red Cross to assist its ongoing efforts to provide assistance to the people affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
To help the victims of countless crises around the world each year considering making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need.
