Course being taught on pre- and perinatal massage

The Center for Business and Technology (CBT) at Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) and the Department of Massage Therapy will host internationally-recognized pre- and perinatal massage therapy specialist Linda Hickey, one of Canada's leading maternity massage therapy experts. She will conduct a professional development workshop for licensed massage therapists from throughout New England on the STCC campus Aug. 17 through 20.

Participants in this program will:

Practice and receive feedback on over 80 advanced techniques that enhance pregnant, laboring and postpartum women's comfort, health and enjoyment.

Increase competency and confidence to safely meet the challenges of the childbearing year.

Become a certified pre- and perinatal massage therapy specialist.

This program meets American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) continuing education standards and is approved for 32 contact hours. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Massage therapists interested in participating in this program should call the CBT at 755-4225 or 755-4501 to enroll or to request a copy of the detailed brochure.

After two days of intensive instruction and practice, these licensed therapists will complete a supervised practicum with pregnant women as volunteer clients. Pregnant women beyond their 13th week who are experiencing normal pregnancies would be eligible to receive a free massage during this practicum taking place Aug. 19. Eligible individuals who are interested in being volunteer clients can contact Mary Breeding, Director of the CBT, at 755-4501. No fee will be charged to clients.
