|CHICOPEE Every 15 minutes some dies by suicide; every 16 minutes loved ones are left to make sense of their loss. |
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) will offer a nationwide teleconference allowing survivors to share their experiences of loss on Nov. 19 at Elms College. This conference will feature a diverse panel of experienced survivors and mental health professionals.
On this broadcast, the panel of survivors and mental health professionals will address the questions that so many survivors face. “Why did this happen? How can I cope? Where can I find support? I am ready to volunteer; what can I do?” For every person who dies by suicide and 36,000 will die this year alone, there are numerous survivors left behind to cope with the tragic loss.
Faith Sullivan a psychologist from Western Massachusetts is featured on the teleconference lost her 31 year-old son, Tony, to suicide in 2002. In the aftermath of her son’s death, Sullivan felt isolated and marginalized for the first time in her life, but she spoke openly about his suicide anyway. She also let others know that she wanted to talk about it.
Sullivan will discuss how this experience has changed her and what she found most helpful as she coped in the early says of grief. Sullivan will join survivors at Elms College and share her healing skills.
The conference is meant to encourage survivors throughout the country to join together in their healing process. The conference will be linked with 275 sites throughout the world, which is scheduled from 1030 a.m. to noon.
There will be break out groups in the afternoon after the national conference. Break out groups will address individual losses such as spouse, sibling, child, parent and special person.
“A Healing Conference for Those Who Have Experienced a Loss Through Suicide” will take place on Nov. 19. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Alumnae Library.
The cost for this conference is $20 per person and $10 for students with lunch and snacks are included; financial assistance is available for those needing it. Maximum family fee is $50. Parking is free.
