First ever Stair Climb a success



SPRINGFIELD -- The first ever Springfield Stair Climb, a fundraiser for the American Lung Association (ALA) of New England, was a game of numbers: 24 stories/48 flights of stairs, 118 pre-registered climbers and over $18,000 raised.
Fifteen teams participated in the city s inaugural event, which also takes place in Hartford, Boston, Providence, Worcester, Manchester, Bennington and Stamford. Participants raced up the stairs at Monarch Place in hopes of making the fastest time to win medals from the ALA.
In first place, with a time of 2:31, was Paul Curley of the team Bake-n-joy. In second, with a time of 2:41, was Matt Anderson of the Dennis Group Average Joes; and in third, with a time of 3:12, Kevin Shea of the Meddowe Vintage Base Ball Club.
The results, which were announced at JT's Sports Pub on Main Street after the climb, included fastest males and females in different age brackets, the fastest teams and the fastest individuals in the firefighter, health professional and law enforcement categories.
The fastest males ages 19-29 were Matt Anderson, Brian McClelland and Jason Donnachie; ages 30-39, Kevin Shea, Kevin Glick and Douglas Sanford; ages 40-49, Mark Pirog, Mark Hurwitz and Greg Connors; ages 50-59, Paul Curley, Jim Place and Anthony Bannish; and ages 60-69, Joseph Morse.
The fastest females ages 13-18 were Emily Curley, Katie Curley and Ilianna Alonso; ages 19-29, Caroline Payne, Kathleen Britton and Jessica Castro; ages 30-39, Wendy Hartman, Katie Sullivan and Maura McCaffrey; ages 40-49, Heidi Meissner, Yolanda Cotto and Michele Johnson; ages 50-59, Connie Lynch and Sharon Dorsey; and ages 60-69, Nancy Graham.
The fastest teams were Bake-n-joy (total of 20:46), the Dennis Group Average Joes (total of 21:22) and Meddowe Vintage Base Ball (total of 22:21).
Chicopee Fire Department won the award for fastest firefighter team, with Mark Pirog of Chicopee winning fastest firefighter, Bob Sadowski of Holyoke taking second and Douglas Sanford of Chicopee taking third.
Lynn Ostrowski, Connie Lynch and K Swain were the quickest health professionals up the stairs; Richard Henry, Mark Hammon and Paul Gay were the quickest law enforcement officers.
