April 16, 2012 SPRINGFIELD — Billy McBride, former San Francisco 49er will kick off Keystone Woods' "Healthy Living for Life" initiative with a new community activity entitled "Get Up Off of That Thing!" The "Healthy Living for Life" initiative will focus on what the National Institute of Aging calls the four main types of exercise seniors can do regularly that can prevent or delay diabetes and heart trouble and can also reduce arthritis pain, anxiety and depression:
  • Endurance activities — like walking, swimming, or riding a bike — which build "staying power" and improve the health of the heart and circulatory system.
  • Strengthening exercises, which build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss.
  • Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible.
  • Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall.
Additionally, McBride will put strong emphasis on teamwork, diversity, attitude and inclusion. All levels of fitness are welcome and no special equipment or clothes are needed. He stated, "Reaching out has always been a part of what I do." Though McBride has been a guest at Keystone Woods before with a Zumba Gold class, "Get Up Off of That Thing" will be his first solo project. Once McBride shares his positive message with the residents of Keystone Woods, he looks forward to doing the same with other senior citizens throughout the region. "It's wonderful that Billy will kick off Keystone Woods' 'Healthy Living for Life' imitative! It fits in nicely with many of the programs that are already offered at Keystone Woods," Mareen Harwell, Life Enrichment director at The Gardens of Keystone Woods, said. Some of Keystone Woods most popular activities include Tai Chi, Yoga and Chair Exercises. "Get Up Off of That Thing!" starts on April 25 at 1:30 p.m. at The Gardens Independent Living Community at Keystone Woods. There will be a limited number of spaces available to non-Keystone Woods residents older than the age of 55.
