Production explores depression in elderly

SPRINGFIELD — The Center for Human Development is producing the play "Talking with Dolores," the afternoon of Dec. 15 at the Majestic Theater in West Springfield. "Talking with Dolores" was written by Dee O'Connor, a 1976 graduate of Westfield State College who also has a PhD in public policy and aging, to raise awareness about elder isolation, depression and suicide. "Talking with Dolores" is billed as a "one-act play about aging, life-and-death choices, and saving room for dessert." It will be performed by actors from West Springfield's Majestic Theater and directed by Steve Henderson, who also plays the lead character of Mo, the 85-year-old owner of Mo's Diner and a widower, who contemplates his life while talking to the portrait of his late wife, Dolores. The performance will take place Dec. 1 at 1:30 p.m. at the theater, which is located at 131 Elm St. The Dec. 15 performance will also serve as an introduction to the Western Massachusetts community of CHD's new elder services division, Hawthorn Elder Care, the result of the July 1 merger between CHD and Hawthorn Services. Tickets are $10; $7 for seniors. Group rates are also available. For more information, contact Janet Simeone at 439-2106 or jsimeone@chd.org.
