River Valley Yoga Center offers gentle restorative workshop

Feb. 27, 2013
FLORENCE – As part of its therapeutic Sunday Workshop Series, River Valley Yoga Center will hold a special Gentle Restorative Workshop at its 30 North Maple St. studio on March 3 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. with Kim Bressem.

Recent studies show that Gentle/Restorative Yoga is instrumental in boosting immunity and is key in fighting metabolic disorders. The American Heart Association estimates that 50 million Americans suffer from metabolic syndrome, and the number is growing. Abdominal obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides and insulin resistance are handcuffed to the body's metabolism. A person who has three or more of these is considered to have the syndrome.

"Restorative yoga, with its emphasis on supported poses, allows the body to enter a very deep, restful state. It is in that state that the body starts to repair itself," Bressem said. "Through yoga, you allow the body a chance to fully heal itself by being in the 'rest and digest' mode. This counteracts the stressful lives we have these days."

Some of the benefits received in this workshop are gentle release of tension through supported postures translating into more relaxed and lengthened muscles and an overall feeling of physical ease; this is a gentle yoga practice with a focus on the breath, clearing the mind and boosting immunity. Slow, deep stretching will also be included allowing the Psoas muscles to relax, alleviating chronic lower back pain and relief from sciatica symptoms.

The fees for the workshop are $30 for drop-ins, $25 for those who pre-registered online. No previous yoga experience is necessary, and all levels are welcome.

The River Valley Yoga Center is focused on yoga as a therapeutic tool to improve structural strength, flexibility, balance and an overall feeling of good health. Owners Susan Elena Esquivel and Suzie Goldstein are influenced by the hatha yoga tradition of B.K.S. Iyengar, and the center is committed to that method. Iyengar Yoga often makes use of props, in performing postures, minimizing the risk of injury or strain.

Bressem has taught Restorative Yoga in the Valley for over 12 years and has an extensive training background in the Iyengar method as well as being an educational psychologist. Bressem is passionate about applying therapeutic yoga practices to work on both physical and emotional issues and is adept at modifying postures so that all students can experience the benefits of yoga regardless of physical restrictions.

The studio is open seven days a week providing private lessons and a variety of daily classes including Bressem's weekly Gentle/Restorative class on Fridays. It offers a membership program through which students can choose to come once, twice or three times a week, in addition to standard class card and drop-in options.
