Springfield doctor named president of Hampden District Medical Society

Dr. Stephen A. Metz, a local Ob/Gyn, was recently named president of the Hampden District Medical Society (HDMS).

Metz is a graduate of University of Maryland School of Medicine and has a doctorate in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is presently an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Tufts University School of Medicine as well as an adjunct associate professor in the School of Public Health and Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts and practices female pelvic and reconstructive surgery in Springfield.

Metz has authored many medical articles and abstracts and has participated in numerous presentations and lectures. He retired from 17 years of active duty with the United States Navy Medical Corps with the permanent rank of commander.

Metz has served on many committees of the HDMS and the Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) and currently serves as co-trustee to the MMS.

Other officers installed to serve are President-Elect Dr. James Wang, assistant clinical professor in the Department of Ob/Gyn at Baystate Medical Center, Vice President Dr. Claudia Martorell, an Infectious Disease physician in private practice in Springfield, Secretary Dr. Teresa Klich-Nowak, an Internist who specializes in Rheumatology practicing in Holyoke and Treasurer Dr. Mark Mullan, an Internist with Cardiology & Internal Medicine in Springfield. Serving as trustee to the MMS Board of Trustees is Dr. Mark Sherman, a cardio-thoracic, vascular surgeon in private practice in Springfield and Metz as alternate trustee.

Besides being a referral service, the society conducts a variety of medical education programs for physicians and health care professionals. Founded in 1850, it is one of the oldest continuously operating medical society in the country.
