Dr. Philip Stoddard accepting the 2008 Senior Volunteer Physician of the Year Award from Dr. Peter Masso of Shriners Hospital.
Dr. Philip Stoddard was awarded the 2008 Senior Volunteer Physician of the Year Award.
This prestigious award is presented to a physician who has demonstrated outstanding dedication and commitment to the medical community in a volunteer capacity. Stoddard, a past president (1981-82), was nominated for this award based on his substantial contributions performing cleft lip and palate surgery at Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield.
Aside from treating children in Springfield, Stoddard has teamed up with Rotaplast, an arm of Rotary International, which was formed in 1992 and during the past eight years has sent 30 teams to Third World countries to help children born with cleft lip and palate.
Stoddard's travels recently took him and a team of 32 to Tacna, Peru, where they screened 135 children and operated on 92 patients in a six-day period. The team consisted of four plastic surgeons, four anesthesiologists, two pediatricians, six registered nurses and Rotarian volunteers making up the team effort. Surgeries are performed in a hospital undergoing reconstruction from earthquake damage. Local Rotarians arranged all accommodations for the visits and gathered children from surrounding areas for treatment.
