Suicide Prevention Foundation announces recent election results

GREATER SPRINGFIELD -- Mary Pat McMahon and Paul Lewis, co-chairman of the Western Massachusetts Board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) announced board elections.

Barry Sarvet, M.D. chief, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry vice chair, Department of Psychiatry Baystate Health, associate clinical professor Tufts University School of Medicine was re-elected President of the Western Massachusetts Chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The AFSP is the leading non-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education advocacy and to reaching out to people with mood disorders and those affected by suicide.

Dr Sarvet recently served as the medical director for AFSP's National Overnight Walk in Boston where 1700 people walked through the night raising $2.2 million dollars.

Joining Dr. Sarvet is Dr. Piyush Johari of Longmeadow who was recently elected to the Western Massachusetts Chapter of AFSP board. Dr. Johari is in private practice in Holyoke.

He attended Seth GS Medical College in Mumbai, India and trained in psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and St Georges's Hospital Medical School London, England. He is a resident of Longmeadow.

Also elected to the Board was Constance (Connie) J. Mahoney of Springfield. Dr. Mahoney joins the board from the Springfield School Department where she serves as director of prevention & intervention resources.

Mahoney graduated with a Master's of education from Westfield State College. Her undergraduate education began at West Chester University, West Chester, Pennsylvania. She joins having already collaborated with AFSP's Western Massachusetts Chapter with their participation in Springfield's Project One initiative this past spring.

David S Cates, Ph.D., director, behavioral health, Baystate Health, was elected along with Dr. Sarvet. Dr. Cates is responsible for strategic and operational oversight of the Behavioral Health Service Line at Baystate Medical Center, including inpatient, outpatient, partial hospital, and consultation-liaison services.

Baystate Medical Center is a 659-bed academic, research, and teaching hospital that serves as the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine.

In addition to operations at Baystate Medical Center, her responsibilities include strategic planning and operational support for behavioral health services at Baystate Franklin Medical Center and Baystate Mary Lane Hospital. Areas of responsibility include 132 FTE's and budget of $13 million.

Other members of the board include Diana Lewis of East Longmeadow, Neena Grover of Longmeadow and State Sen. Stephen Buoniconti and Linda J. Shippie of West Springfield. AFSP's annual fundraiser the "Out of the Darkness Community Walk is scheduled for Sept. 12, 2010 at the Jewish Community Center.
