Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida on June 7

May 15, 2014
WESTFIELD – The Spina Bifida Association of Greater New England (SBAGNE) is sponsoring the annual Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida.

The Walk-N-Roll for Spina Bifida is a family-friendly walk will take place in various locations across the greater New England to raise awareness about Spina Bifida and celebrate the accomplishments of the more than 180,000 Americans living with it. The Walk-N-Roll will occur at Stanley Park June 7. Event registration begins at 9 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10:30 a.m.

“We believe these events bring attention to the importance of making folic acid a daily habit as well as to issues related to the varied health concerns caused by Spina Bifida,” Ellen Heffernan-Dugan, executive director, SBAGNE, said. “We hope this walk will heighten awareness related to Spina Bifida and to the diverse medical and psychosocial issues related.”

All proceeds are used for programs and services for people living with Spina Bifida.

Spina Bifida, an incomplete closure of the spinal column that occurs in the first month of pregnancy, is the most frequently occurring permanently disabling birth defect in the United States, and it affects Hispanics more than any other racial or ethnic group. By consuming 400 mcg (0.4 mg) of folic acid in a supplement or multivitamin prior to pregnancy, women can reduce the likelihood of their child being born with serious birth defects like Spina Bifida by as much as 70 percent.

The SBAGNE is a local affiliate of the Spina Bifida Association. The SBAGNE is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont affected by Spina Bifida, by providing a community of support, advocacy and education. Supports include: educational and social events, advocacy, helpline, quarterly newsletter and financial benefits.
