May 30, 2012
WESTFIELD Westfield Police and Fire departments will go arm to arm to help the Noble Hospital Blood Donor Center in the second annual Guns vs. Hoses Blood Donor Challenge on June 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
To show their community support in a friendly challenge, the two groups will roll up their sleeves to see who can donate the most blood.
"What makes this event different from many of the other local blood drives is that all of the blood collected will be used exclusively at Noble Hospital to help people in the Westfield area. Everyone in my department is excited about participating in the upcoming event. We all feel that it is a great opportunity for the Westfield Police and Fire departments to join forces with Noble Hospital for the benefit of our community," Joan Murphy, transfusion services and microbiology supervisor, said.
Police Capt. Michael McCabe said, "The Police Department is willing to bleed for its community, and they're willing to put their arms where their mouths are."
Guns vs. Hoses Blood Donor Challenge is sponsored by Noble Hospital and Westfield Emergency Physicians, P.C.
Subway Restaurant will be providing food at the event, and each blood donor will be given a $5 Subway gift card and goodie bag. Clifford Laraway, who lives in Westfield with his family, is the owner of Subway Restaurants in the Pioneer Valley. Laraway is donating lunch for the Blood War participants, and said that he and his family are happy to help Noble Hospital with the Blood Wars blood drive.
"We have raised our children in Westfield and used Noble Hospital on many occasions .We are pleased to be able to give back and support our community hospital," he said.
The winning team will receive the Blood Donor Challenge Cup a trophy recognizing the winning team's accomplishment. Blood Donor Challenge is an annual event, with the Blood Donor Challenge Cup awarded to the winning team each year.
