HOLYOKE — On March 14, Maureen Wishart became the sixth executive director of the Holyoke Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) in its 106-year history.

Beginning in 1905, when known as the District Nurse Service in Holyoke, "the community raised sufficient funding to elect a nurse for three months." Through the efforts, support and guidance of many, the organization has grown to what it is today, a highly respected and integral member of the community. The Holyoke VNA and Hospice Life Care provide a quality continuum of care, utilizing advanced technology, not only for Holyoke residents, but also for those living in the 19 adjacent cities and towns.

Robert Pueschel, chair of the Search Committee and chair of the Board of Directors, said, "After an extensive search process, I welcome Maureen Wishart to the Holyoke VNA and Hospice Life Care. I feel that we have found the individual who can lead us into the challenging times ahead. As Chairman of the Board, I look forward to working with Maureen. Her enthusiasm and energy will be good for the agency."

Upon completing her first week at the agency, Wishart stated, "What has become obvious to me in a very short time, is the amazing team that is here and the commitment to the mission of the organization. We have an excellent framework to build on an already amazing association."

Wishart acknowledged that the home health care and hospice industries involve many challenges, in terms of regulations and reimbursement. She noted that it is crucial to maintain a balance, in order to be compliant, fiscally responsible, offer the highest standards of quality compassionate care, while being absolutely patient-centered.

Wishart's background is well rounded with more than 20 years of experience in a variety of settings, including acute care, long term care, long term acute care, palliative care and hospice care.

She has been in leadership for the past 14 years, with the last four in a senior leadership role.

She is a graduate of American International College where she earned her BSN and Regis University where she received a MBA.

Wishart is currently a member of the faculty of the University of Phoenix.
