Barb Turcotte of Springfield is the driving force behind the success of the Just Cause Singles Group, based in East Longmeadow.
EAST LONGMEADOW -- If you prefer face-to-face socializing rather than Facebook, the Just 'Cause Singles Group might be the ideal avenue to explore.

The vibrant, community-minded group meets the third Saturday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Quantum Life Management Center, 30 Westwood Ave. Barb Turcotte of Springfield has been the driving force behind the success of the group which was launched in the fall of 2002.

"Just 'Cause provides a safe environment that encourages friendships plus offers an opportunity to participate and enjoy events with others who share the same interests," said Turcotte during an interview with Reminder Publications.

Turcotte noted that the first meeting is free and allows singles (late 40s to late 60s) the chance to participate in any of the planned events for that month. A dues fee of $10 is charged each month, which pays for incidentals throughout the year, including the monthly birthday cake, pizza and beverages.

"This group is a little different than most single groups in the fact that it's not romance focused, though we have some happy couples who have met within the group and others who have met their special someone when we've been out attending all types of events," said Turcotte.

For singles who enjoy participating in sporting events including white water rafting, hiking and biking, or who like going to the movies, seeing a play or attending a concert, Just 'Cause offers something for everyone.

"If you're single and tired of sitting home alone watching the same old shows on TV, come and find out what we're all about," added Turcotte.

Turcotte stressed that the monthly calendar of events can fit into anyone's budget or time constraints -- since many of the social events are free or are reasonably priced.

"Just 'Cause members enjoy spending time with friends -- plus having the opportunity to make some new ones," she said.

For Turcotte, Just 'Cause is a labor of love -- since all of her time is donated to ensure the group remains self-sufficient.

"I'm amazed at the lifetime friends I've made," said Turcotte, adding, "Just 'Cause has made a difference in people's lives and that feeds my soul."

Turcotte noted that members also care about each other, and are always welcoming to new members and new ideas for events to share.

"We are willing to try anything once," she added.

In the spring, Turcotte expects to add target practice at Smith & Wesson, horseback riding, archery and biking to the list of monthly events that also includes a plethora of get-togethers at local restaurants.

In addition, Turcotte will host the third O'Brien's Idol/Just 'Cause Contest at O'Brien's Corner, 1082 Page Blvd. in Springfield. Competition began on Feb. 27 and continues on March 13 with the finale on April 10.

The Log Cabin in Holyoke will also be the setting for the Rays of Hope/Just 'Cause fundraiser on March 26 which will benefit the local Rays of Hope charity organization.

"When was the last time you were able to start your night off with as much food as you wanted, enjoyed some comedy, danced to two bands, shopped for some awesome products, all for $35, to benefit a wonderful local charity?" Turcotte asked.

"We are unique because we want to not only help out our communities but we want to make connections to make new friends," said Turcotte. "It's the perfect scenario and it doesn't cost anything for the first meeting to check us out."
