Long Meddowe Days return with fun, food and crafts ~Submitted by the Longmeadow Historical Society
LONGMEADOW The Longmeadow Historical Society presents the 26th Annual Long Meddowe Days to take place on May 20, 21 & 22.
Long Meddowe Days is our town's celebration, a time to commemorate our town history. The event takes places on our beautiful town Green. During Long Meddowe Days, the entire family has a chance to shop for arts and crafts, take historic tours, march in the town parade, ride a pony, climb the wall and enjoy musical entertainment all weekend long.
On Friday, May 20, Long Meddowe Days will kick off the start of a fun-filled family weekend with a concert by the band Emotion at the traditional Family Picnic on the Green beginning at 5:30 pm.
On Saturday, May 21, the festivities begin with the 12th Annual Tim Page Road Race. Walkers start at 7:30 a.m., runners at 8 a.m. The ever-popular "Our Town" parade follows beginning at 9 a.m. at St. Mary's Church. Marchers will begin assembling in St. Mary's back parking lot at 8:30 a.m. The juried arts and crafts will be available on Saturday and Sunday. Tours of the historical Storrs House, walking tours of Longmeadow architecture and the Longmeadow cemetery will be on Saturday and Sunday. Also, visit "Old Longmeadow" as a group of Crafters and their families set up a village consisting of Blacksmiths, weavers, fireplace cooking and more.
As is the tradition, a Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, May 22, at noon on the Longmeadow Town Green. Delivering the Key Message will be Colonel Michael R. Boulanger, past Commander of the 104th Fighter Wing at Barnes Air National Guard Base. As first begun in the year 1870, the Memorial Service will be a "Tribute to Honor Those Who Fought and Died for Our Country," with The Reverend Michael S. Bennett from Longmeadow First Church of Christ participating. Local honored elected officials present will include Select Board Chairman Hal Haberman, State Representative Mary Rogeness and State Senator Brian Lees.
Long Meddowe Days is sponsored by Citizen's Bank, City Tire Company, Glenmeadow, Hampden Bank, Houser Buick, Longmeadow Garage, Pat Parker & Sons Florists, People's Bank, USA Hauling & Recycling, United Bank, and Woronoco Savings Charitable Foundation.
Girl Scouts participate in 'Days'
The Longmeadow Girl Scouts will again be setting up a "mini-camporee" on the town green opposite First Church for the Long Meddowe Days weekend. They will be selling their ever popular Longmeadowopoly game. There will be displays depicting three generations of Girl Scouting, and girls and adults will be available to answer any questions.
Several troops will be spending the night in tents, either on Friday or Saturday. Saturday night at 5 p.m., there will be a cookout for all Longmeadow scouts and their families. Following the cookout at 7 p.m., there will be a campfire.
All Girl Scouts (or prospective Girl Scouts) and their families are invited to stop by for some singing and a lot of fun. Bring cooking sticks (no coat hangers) and ingredients for making s'mores. A camp representative will be on hand to give an update on the many summer camp opportunities. Reservations need to be made for the supper, but not for the campfire. For further information or to make a reservation, call Laurie Hatch, Longmeadow unit coordinator at 567-7420.
